Firefox question

I suppose this is OT for a pclos list, but I don't know where else to ask:
I recently found myself using the big E Internet browser in Windows 7, which i almost never do, and discovered
that instead of (or in addition to?) bookmarks, it has the ability to copy an url to the start menu, from where, if you like, you
can make an icon and put it on the desktop. I couldn't find a bookmark routine, but I did take advantage of the
start menu option, because the url is for a localized weather report, and I'm sure I'll want to look at that often.
So the question: is there any way to do this with Firefox? (Especially in Linux--I very seldom use Windows.)

The weather report is one of several from NOAA, the url is: http://forecast.weather.gov  It will forecast for your
zip code!

You could add it to your applications menu.

The '-new-window' parameter is optional; if Firefox is already open, leaving it out merely means that the site is opened in an existing window.  If I add " %u" after 'firefox' I get an error message in Firefox "Firefox can't find the server at www.%u.com."

you can create a link to a app in your desktop in kde4 when your desktop is in folder view mode

copy the link you need and in the desktop right click/ create new/link to location url

in the first field put a name for the new icon that will be on your desktop, in the second paste the address you posted or whatever address you need to create a link to a url and press ok to create it

it will load with the default web browser, just tested it and opened with firefox, it seems to load the default browser and that is opera at the moment, if you want another browser like opera, i don't remember where is this done under configure your desktop

The line from Ternor works when typed onto the terminal.  However, if I make it into a file--say called wx1--the only way it
works is if I type ./wx1  There must be someplace it will run without the ./ in front--which I don't understand.
From ųT6, I have some questions: What is "folder view mode" and how do you set that?  Apparently I need to do that to
proceed, since if I right click on the desktop I have, there is no "create new"  Then there is a reference to "first field" and
"second field" which I don't understand either, unless that is something that comes up after doing the folder view trick.
I'm sorry to be such a nudnick, but I am! P;ease explain as if to a 12-year-old, and maybe I can understand.

if you are in kde, then you know that you can chabge activities, the one you must be using is not the one that lets you use the procedure i mentioned

to enter in the desktop mode required on the wallpaper right click on the las option

it should say something like default settings

in the window loaded on the upper field it mentions the mode, from the list select folder view

then you can follow my previos steps mentioned, sorry if i'm not precise or specific enough, i had problems with my router and i'm writing this from my smartphone

Take a look at the ForecastFox add-on.    It's pretty reliable.

Have you tried it?

I can drag & drop from the location bar onto the desktop, select 'create icon' and it creates a launcher there .......  or

if using Folder View create a Link ......  same effect ...

right-click an empty spot on your desktop-you'll get a pop-up
the bottom option will be Default Folder options (if you currently have Folder desktop)
or
Default Desktop options (if you currently have Desktop desktop)

to make shortcuts & links on your desktop you want Folder view

then T6's instructions should work
right-click your desktop & check out the options.

You must be.  I'm in Folder View with locked widgets and it works perfectly for me.  In fact, I use it quite often as a sort of long term but temporary bookmark with a reminder, since it's visible right on the desktop.

You have to click and drag the favicon (the tiny icon at the left end of the navigation bar) and when you drop it on the desktop, it will ask if you want to Move Here, Copy Here or Link Here.  Link Here will create a desktop launcher, named for the URL in question, with a default icon image.

Yep dragging the icon works fine.
