storage device manager is blank and won't close
« on: October 21, 2012, 02:36:22 PM »
I have PCLOS KDE 2012 both full blown desktop and minime. In both, the storage device manager opens but is blank. Nothing shows except the items in the title bar. When I try to close it, it won't close. The only way I have found to get it off the desktop is log out and back in.

Is there something that I need to install in addition to pysdm?
Thanks,
Harold

I had never tried this before .....

I get the same as you ......  but if I open a terminal and su to root

then I can launch it ok.

EDIT: .......  Just tried it again from the launcher ...... it takes a while for it to populate the window ...  but it appears to be working ......

Thanks, I have left mine open for long periods of time and went ahead and did something else but the window was never populated.

I just looked at the command in the menu for starting 'storage device manager' and it says "gksu -a pysdm". Maybe it needs "su" instead of "gksu"? I will try that.

edit
su didn't work
tried entering the path /usr/bin/psydm and it didn't open
Once I do get it open I can't get it to close. Just have to log out and back in.

Just installed it here and it appears to be working. I have launched it from the application launcher and also from the Konsole terminal. They both display the same results.

Swap the letters?

What if you try kdesu instead of gksu?

It needs to be run as root.
It also takes a little time here to close.

You could try the following ....

open a terminal and use the command

su -

supply your root password, then at the prompt do

pysdm

Immediately I head a lot of activity on my harddrives, and when that finishes the window opens properly.
Apparently it takes some time to get the required info about the HDDs ....

If something goes wrong an error might be reported in the terminal.
If so you can copy/paste that into your next post.

I will try your suggestion later today. Off to work.

Will also give this a try after work today.

edit after work
From the full blown PCLOS KDE desktop I edited the menu and tried 'kdesu -a pysdm' and saved it. Then tried to open it from the menu and I was not asked for the root password and storage device manager didn't open.
Then I tried from the run command and entered 'kdesu -a pysdm'. It asked for the root password and opened but never was populated with anything. I left it open while I edited this message which or over 5 minutes.

OK, tried the minime install by using the run command and 'kdesu pysdm'. The window opened just like in the full desktop but never populated, either. Also neither one will will close when I click the red X in the top right of the window. I get this message in a warning kwin window,
Quote
The window "Storage Device Manager" is not responding. It belongs to the application pysdm.py (Process ID = 3340, hostname = localhost).
Do you wish to terminate the application process including all of its child windows?
Any unsaved data will be lost.
There are two buttons on the bottom. One says 'terminate' and the other is 'cancel'. Neither has any effect on the window closing.

Harold

Just a thought - I've never used storage device manager is it worth looking at the "options" in

Config Your Desktop > Hardware > Removable Devices
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Sony Vaio SVE1513A4ESI Laptop, Intel Core i5, 2.6GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB, 15.6" Intel HD Graphics 4000

I have never used it before either. I just stumbled across it while in Minime and looking for a way to mount a partition using a gui.

I will look at removable devices in config your desktop, hardware.

edit
in removable devices, I checked Enable Automatic mounting of removable media and the unchecked all except Automatically mount removable media when attached. Still no window population. I think I have uninstalled and re-installed in the full desktop  but whatever is not right is happening both in the full desktop and Minime.

Not going to mark this solved but will not spend a lot more time on trying to use 'storage device manager'. The partition that I needed to mount can be mounted from the command line easy enough. If I can get to the files on that partition from Dolphin then that will be fine with me. If I or someone finds a solution to the no window population and the window not closing then I will come back and mark it solved. Thanks

I have a problem that relates to this thread.  I needed Device Manager, I thought I had used this many moths ago on a system to mount a single partition at boot time.  I do not recognise my paticular OS install but will put this down to advanced years.

The problem however is for me it will only respond to any partition number <10.  They all seems to be detected (some 40 plus) but only numbers under 10 can be selected and activate configuration.  In my case I want to activate /dev/sdb10.

I started in root konsole, actually I wanted the help but it started up, and I have configured a test /dev/sdc1 as I happen to run this system at present.:

Code: [Select]
[root@localhost gert]# pysdm --help
Warning: Unknown especial options for ext4 filesystem
Warning: Unknown option: rw
Warning: nouser is not suitable for user
Warning: Unknown option: async
Warning: Unknown option: defaults
[root@localhost gert]#

Have no idea at this time what this refers to but expect it was the config details I filled in.   :).

Added later:

KDE - Be Free! Platform Version 4.9.5 fully updated

[gert@localhost ~]$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 3.2.18-pclos2.bfs #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu May 24 04:44:50 CEST 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
[gert@localhost ~]$

PS: This problem is no longer important to me, since I did not recognise the install I dug into my records and found it was Device Notifier that I was after, and I am now configuring up to suit my need.
