My 'run in' with a Huntsman Spider.
« on: February 06, 2013, 12:27:12 PM »
I walked into my Kitchen last night and to my horror saw a huge Huntsman Spider on the pull down blind.

The hot weather brings out all types of creepy crawlies. Having done this before I armed myself with my bamboo back scratcher, and a 12" diameter biscuit tin, and lid.

It was a big one, and it was quite late so was a little peeved. Idea was to guide him with the bamboo stick into the biscuit tin, and lid it !

He was to have nothing of that and took off up the wall onto the top of the cupboards, and peeped out at me.

At this point he had the 'upper hand' as they like to jump at you and make their get away. I was waving the back scratcher at him and to my amazement he jumped down onto the range hood above the stove, and was in a prone position inches from me on the stove top.

A gentle move of the stick from behind and he launched himself into the biscuit tin, and I quickly put the lid on.

I had no intention of letting it go when outside and trying to squish the critter, in the dark. It was in a sealed tin, I could have thrown him over the fence, but not such a neighbourly act, so I put the tin in the Recycling rubbish bin.

Then I was feeling, "Oh heck, I better kill him", the thought of it sitting in there for a day till the rubbish is collected was not a nice thought. Anyway I did just leave the tin there, and he's been Recycled.  ;D

You get an idea from this Video what a nuisance they are to carch, and they're are very aggressive.

no idea where this came from originally.

whether it's just an "old wives tale", or a small part of a bigger / longer work, I have no idea.

it just sprung to mind  :)

The ones here in Sydney must be very tame, as I get at least a couple of dozen in my city apartment over the Summer months, and I have never been attacked by one. In fact, a couple of times the only way I knew I had one in my home was when I felt something tickling my leg while sitting at my computer & looked down to see a huge huntsman crawling up my leg. A slight movement of the hand towards them will usually send them scampering to a hiding place such as behind a cupboard.

They're virtually harmless to humans, (their diet consists primarily of insects and other invertebrates, and occasionally small skinks and geckos) so the best way to deal with them if you don't want to kill them is just to catch them in a container or let them crawl onto the far end of a broom, and drop them near a tree which has bark they can hide under.  You can also use a broom to slowly sweep the wall behind them & thus guide them along the wall until they can exit into the garden. They are very unlikely to bite humans, and even if they do, the bite will only cause a bit of local swelling & slight pain, but that will disappear within a day or two.

Just convenience I suppose Bald Brick to call it "He"  ;) Was the size of my hand, but was a 'Bitch' of a monster, squating waiting to jump at my face of the stove top. I felt it's a Male, as combat was ensuing between two warriors.  ;D
Quite possibly a Female as a lot of the more aggressive Spiders' are female.

On the bright side, at least it wasn't a sneaky little 'Red Back' (Black Widow) , deadly; or the notorious 'Funnel Web Spider'; which is very deadly but lucky for me lives in Sydney, not Melbourne, or the White-tailed spider   :o

I'll post you a couple if you PM your Address ! Plenty of flesh and hairs to feast one.  :D

The Chinese would love them, and with Mandarin Chinese officially being the 2nd most spoken language in Australia I bet they're having a ball. They'll catch anything that moves, and Wok it !!  ;D  Protein !

Generally I would have tossed it in the garden, but it's been about 40C for the last week and I felt I'd done well to get it in the tin.

It's the heat I think, these things don't have a Metabalism as far as I know, if it's cool they are cool, if Hot, they're in Turbo mode is my experience.

Yes, I've had them run up my leg, run out of shorts, pants, T-Shirts as I've gone to wear the item after getting it off the clothes line.  ;D  :'(

There were a few possums on the Recycle bin I had to "Shoo" away when disposing of this Huntsman. Sick of it , ...It's just really Hot here at moment, all the critters are in Hyper Drive.   :P  ::)

I won't mention the snakes, ...  :D

i use the tried and true class and card method of catchig spiders, though mostly i leave them alone.  it's the flying bugs that get annoying and those i catch using a sieve and flat, circular pan splatter screen.

i see neither point nor merit to killing anything that isn't attacking me.  catch and release. fleas and gnats look out.

Yes, the glass and the card is great if the thing fits in a glass. I was just getting a glass of water, and a few red mushrooms, and was heading off to bed ... was around 1:00 AM. Both neighbours are in their 80's, couldn't toss it into their yard.
Badgers hey, ... that's spooky stuff.
