JW57,

I did a clean install of PCLinuxOS 64 bit. I ran an update then I enabled sections gcc and xorg and ran the update again. I rebooted and installed steam-launcher from the 64 bit repo. I opened a konsole and typed steam and it started downloading an update then sent me to my login screen where I was able to log into my account.

To create a account with the laucher it's ok (I think) but running applications like games who depend on hardware drivers?
Arch Linux gives more info about that in their wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Steam.

Thanks for the link. I've got it bookmarked for future reference. Seems like Steam was designed for one distro and to run it on another you have to go through a lot of tweaks and hacks especially for 64 bit.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Try installing ia32-libs and run it again. I'm not getting your error at all on a fully updated system.  I will do a clean 64bit install, update and try it again.

Tex

That didn't work so I did a reinstall. Downloading Half-Life 2 beta as I type this!  :D

Followed Tex's instructions and now downloading a game.  Now if they would only have new good games for Linux steam. Guess I can not expect Tex and the gang to do every thing.   ;D  Oh why not.  Hey guys when are you going to release that great game you have been working on?   What did you say?  It will be ready when its ready.  ::)

Please tell us how good this goes under PCLinuxOS :)
I would like to re-play that game at some point ;)

When I run steam it says this:

"Steam needs to install these additional packages:
        curl, jockey-common, python-apt, xterm, xz-utils, zenity, libgl1-mesa-dri:i386, libgl1-mesa-glx:i386, libc6:i386
dpkg: unknown option --print-foreign-architectures

Type dpkg --help for help about installing and deinstalling packages
  • ;

Use `dselect' or `aptitude' for user-friendly package management;
Type dpkg -Dhelp for a list of dpkg debug flag values;
Type dpkg --force-help for a list of forcing options;
Type dpkg-deb --help for help about manipulating *.deb files;
Type dpkg --licence for copyright licence and lack of warranty (GNU GPL)
  • .

Options marked
  • produce a lot of output - pipe it through `less' or `more' !

/home/till/tmp/tmpFt6jbo: line 29: sudo: command not found
/home/till/tmp/tmpFt6jbo: line 33: sudo: command not found

/home/till/tmp/tmpFt6jbo: line 37: sudo: command not found
Press return to continue: "

And then loads the steam client, which seems to work, but trying to run any game results in "Could not find required OpenGL entry point 'glGetError'! Either your video card is unsupported, or your OpenGL driver needs to be updated."
I have an Nvidia GTX 480. In ubun I used the experimental nvidia driver, but I don't know if that'd work here?

The original half life runs perfectly fine with this, downloading left for dead to see how that goes.
Thanks Tex and the guys installed from synaptic, initial run from terminal and no issues showing so far on 32bit install.

I'm currently changing my system right now as my testing of the entry level AMD APU 5300 has ended. The system I have running now runs Half-Life 2 ok, but I'm not happy with it. I'm going to pull out the nvidia 9500gt and throw in my 9800 gtx and that should give me the performance I want. I will report back later.

Here is some with Counter Strike Source. The game runs decent. I had some lag issues, but I think it was more server related than the game.
