somagic-init be entered after each boot (and if so could it be automated)?

Is
somagic-capture -c also necessary each time? All that seems do is invoke a continuous stream of characters. Does that represent a video stream?
Either way, although everything else seems to be ok, the easycap (smi grabber) is still not made available in vlc or guvcview?
