I've had no trouble with NVidia,AMD, HP, most motherboards, onboard sound, onboard video on desktop computers. I had problems with trying to use some old parallel printers and scanners. The new to Toshiba laptop I have is really quirky about running the newer kernels. I could get older kernels to boot but they did not support the newer laptop hardware (AMD video and wireless).  I had to turn on network boot in the bios to give something time to startup. I suspect it is the video but I don't know for sure. Not much but I hope it helps.

I want to buy a new computer, wants to make.
I have a AS Rock motherboard and ATI graphics card (and I'm happy, but it is too old), but ...
- I want to be able to disable UEFI in the BIOS
- A colleague is right, many users complain about lack of new hardware drivers, I would like to avoid
- Newest ATI is a series of 7000, since I started
- Motherboard will with integrated network card and sound card
- computer was used by me to games, programming, graphics creation.

What else can I write?
What do you say about a processor with integrated graphics?

tele:

I can only tell you what I used to build my own computer.

MB = Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3     AM3+ socket   On board sound   4 DDR3 RAM sockets   Up to 32 GB RAM capacity   Realtek RTL8111/8168B Gigabit Etnernet
PSU = Antec BP 550   Modular   550 Watt   80+ Certified
RAM = G.Skill Ripjaws 4x4GB DDR3 1600
CPU = AMD FX-4100 Quad-Core 3.6 GHz AM3+ socket
Graphic Card = nVidia GeForce 9800 GT
Burner = Samsung SH222AB CD/DVD
Case = Rosewill Challanger
Hard Drives: SATA:
  Seagate 750GB External  eSATA + USB2  connectors
  Seagate  1 TB External  eSATA + USB2  connectors
  Seagate  2 TB Green 5900 RPM  Internal
  Seagate  2 TB 7200 RPM  Internel

I built this a year ago last December. If I were to build this today, the only thing I would change would be to use an AMD FX-8320 Vishera 3.5GHz Eight-Core Socket AM3+ Desktop Processor. I can still add that at any time.

Hi, tele!

A lot depends on what you want to do with Linux in 2013.  Not being a smart-@$$ here, but your requirements for audio recording and video editing are going to be a little different from those for surfing the 'net and reading email, just to make an example.

You asked about integrated CPU/graphics?  Looking at your example it appears you're not asking about graphics on the motherboard, but from within the CPU?  I'd not be too prone to do that - a chip that tries to do both might not really do either too well, but I have yet to experience such a beastie, so take that with a small Siberian salt mine in your hip pocket.  (For all I know, there may be hardware synergies that result in improved performance if you can get it supported in Linux...  research will be key for you in this decision.)

Also, it looks like you are maybe wanting to jack up your case and drive a new motherboard under it, and that you like AMD's processors.  You're not alone - lots of folks like AMD.  That said, for raw performance and reliability, intel's Xeon processors are just rock solid.  (Expensive, they are, but you get what you pay for.)

As for motherboards, there are a lot of personal preferences out there.  I like MSI, Gigabyte, and Asus boards, as these are generally well supported by Linux and high quality products.  I've had some bad experiences with Asrock in the past - customers brought me machines they bought from another builder which basically fizzled out after three months of run time.  Build quality was decent, but the motherboards were useless - fried capacitors, other component damage - this with Antec power supplies (which are actually pretty decent).  Since then, I've been really leery of anything made by them.

A good place to do research is http://hardware4linux.info/.  Use their search functions to find out what they know about hardware you're considering using.

If you're looking for pre-built, the nice folks at LinPC.us put together some nice systems with PCLinuxOS pre-installed.  I bought one for my wife a few years back, and it's been a top quality unit - still running as I write here.  Eric, the fellow who runs LinPC, favors less powerful gear, but he's trying to build more affordable systems.  That said, everything he builds is first quality.

I ddidn't mean to write a book here, so let's wrap up.  There's good stuff out there - figure out what you want to do and build to your needs.  One last thing:  the example system that Old-Polack lists has served him pretty well so far by all accounts, and it looks like he got the pieces parts from Newegg.com - you might take a look there and see.  They have a very nice feedback system that can help you sort the wheat from the chaff here.

Good luck with your enterprise, and may your CPU never overheat.

Later On,
D

Intel chipsets, Core i5+ processor, nVidia graphics card, lots of RAM, SSD. Mmmmkay? As for the motherboard itself, go with a mainstream brand. I've had excellent luck with MSI, Asus, and Gigabyte brand boards with Linux. You just want to stay with as mainstream as possible with components. As for peripherals, HP printers have excellent factory support. Stay away from the just released stuff... Support may not be out there yet.

I found this website, but I thing this pages are not fresh and not all,
because we have stable kernel 3.7.9 and I don't know what is there.  >:(
In Synapic we have kernel --> 3.2.18,
Xserver --> I don't know , I don't know how find in synaptic, maybe this is X11-server in synaptic.
Mesa   -->  7.11.2   (Mesa 9.0.3 is released in home page)
or
fglrx-control-center  -->  12.4  (8.961 in synaptic, 13.1 is released  in home page )
so I need Graphics Card for PClinuxOS   :D

ATI

+1

You need to set the priorities of what you'll be doing with the computer and then match the hardware with the need.
there are several list of compatible hardware out there but I find most are not kept up to date , generally I have had no problems
with Nvidia Graphic, Intel I3, 4, 5, etc processors and AMD processors, However I've had problems with ATI graphics cards.
Most onboard sound has been good.  That is very general I know,  I would opt for about 4 gigs of ram as a starting point.

good luck of course you can always get a prebuilt linux machine from several sources.
linpc being one:
http://www.linpc.us/
system 76 makes good ones also
https://www.system76.com/desktops/
But what you end up with really depends on your need, what your willing to spend and personal choice.
