Please help... error no screens found after update.
« on: February 03, 2013, 01:38:56 PM »
Hello. Been with PClinux since 2002. I have been using 64bit test 5 and performed both an update this week and installed RC1 on another HD only to get local.host login after reboot.
Startx reports no screens found. 1. removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf Yes. XFdrake --auto (nothing).
2. removed xorg.conf (both times as root) and rebooted. Got KDE X screen but in letter box size. Before first reboot screen display and size was 1600X900 60htz, full screen.
After reboot and #2 display still says 1600X900 60htz but screen is stretched and two large black areas top and bottom. Took snap shots of before and after and only thing you can see are the icons get smaller in letter box version.
I am using a Nvidia FX 5200 with an Acer s200hl widescreen monitor in DVI. Tried to hold back Nvidia 173 to see if anything changed but it did not.
No one else seems to have a problem but me. Could be either video card or monitor but it has worked great with 64bit test3-5 now it does not. Checked synaptic and have no KDE 4.8.3 files in system.
Can any one point me in the right direction?  Thanks.

Use PCC to configure the video card again. Select the monitor first, then the graphic card, then the resolution, in that order.

Did just a check on the livecd and see there's a faulty/broken nvidia 173 (173.14.36-1.pclos2013) package on the livecd.
A workaround to use the nouveau driver when this is fixed.
All users with a Geforce FX 5xxx card gonna meet this issue.

Edit: a how to here:
Start konsole/terminal

Root to su
su-> password -> enter

then type: XFdrake
search for a xorg driver
you have to select: nouveau

then reboot your system

Thank you both for the help. I just switched HD's for the 10th time, so I will try the John's suggestion next.

Tryied to copy the xorg.cnof from test5 (working) to the updated HD with no luck. Thought it might be my monitor as it is a Acer but listed as a custom with correct model number.

Will report back.

Thanks again.

Nouveau driver does not work. XFdrake reports monitor Custom     Graphics card Custom   Resolution 1600x900

Asked if I want to perform refresh rate? Answer yes get just a flash than an error message. Upon reboot PC goes right to localhost login.

Does this mean I have to wait for a newer Nvidia 173 driver?

Thanks

What it reports as custom, change to what it really is. Chose the monitor first, then the graphic card, then the resolution, choosing the native resolution for the display.

Thanks O-P. I have an Acer monitor that is not listed under Acer. Test5 shows it as a  s200HL monitor. Graphic card as NV34 Nvidia fx5200 and 1600x900.

Will set up other HD with this and report back.

If your monitor is not listed, just choose generic flat screen 1600 x 900.
Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(

sling-shot, tried that first. XFdrake lists monitor as the correct model number but under custom in the first drop down box. Tried to use every Acer model number listed hoping one was close to the s200HL but no good.

Just googled Acer s200hl and saw native resolution is 1440x900. will try that.

It might be wrong for me to jump in here, but I have a very nice 19 inch Samsung monitor that requires special treatment to get 1440xx900 which is its native res in linux and even in WINDOWS! LOL.

If you are having a similar problem would be happy to share those few xorg lines with you.  Maybe it will help? Please report if you are still having difficulty.

Hello Nish. My monitor is a 20" and in both test5 and 32 bit versions displays at 1600x900.
Would like to try your lines to see if and how 1440x900 looks.
Thanks

I'm having a similar problem.

My linux pc keeps crashing in one of two ways after a recent update. One it will just reboot on its own. Two, the screen will get distorted and freeze. I had a similar issue about two years ago and it went away after an update. It basically has become un-usable and crashes every few minutes now.

I'll give the nouveau driver a try, since I have an nvidea 6500. Not sure if it works yet.

**Update.

Using the nouveau seems to keep my system from crashing. However the display is not as crisp and I can see very fast moving lines in it sometimes. I think it depends on the color at that point in time. I can live with it for now. Hopefully the nvidea driver will get fixed soon.
