[SOLVED] PCLos 02 2013 wont get to desktop

Try adding the word    vesa    to the kernel boot line ......  it should give you a desktop ..... of incorrect dimensions etc etc ......  but a desktop.

From there you can try different drivers ....  even install them when using persistence.

After applying a new driver or video setting, instead of rebooting you could (to save some time) close all apps and then use   Ctrl+Alt+Del   to kill the x-server without rebooting.
You could then try to get back to the desktop using the new setting/driver/whatever.

Ummmmm

Just noticed something.   The persistence doesnt keep the drivers.  I have played since, and noticed after a while of looking at the conf file after a reboot that nvidia was back and not nouveau  (using persistence option from grub)

The vesa  option didnt work either, just gave me big text at the login prompt.

Hey Big_al,
Sorry I couldn't dredge up much memory. But I'm pretty sure I didn't resolve the issue of the graphic settings not being saved in my live usb with persistence. My installed system (PCLOS) also wouldn't save my settings to be applied after logout.
I think I finally just installed and worked on the graphic card setup on the installed system.
The PC I was working on doesn't run well on a live system. I recently tried running the new 64bit-rc1 and  couldn't get a stable desktop. It is all pretty old hardware. It has an old cheapo nvidia card geforce210.
But the installed system runs great.
So not much help I'm afraid.
I don't recall hat your intention is, but for me an install worked.

My original intention was to install and use PCLOS as my everyday OS instead of my current full monty.  I am tempted to install from command prompt and see if i can get the right drivers from there.  May post for help with doing this.  Many thanks for advice on here though.

So, having pulled most of my hair out, I decided to start back at the beginning.  I redid the iso using unetbooting.  What was different this time, I dont know, other than I reformatted my usb stick after using the PCLOS live usb creator to go back to unetbooting.  I tried default load live image, still command prompt, but this time on selecting 'load fail safe/safe mode'  it worked, got into desktop, all be it at 1024x768, but did allow me to change it 1280x......  I'm stumped as to explanation.  bad usb stick?  did the reformat do anything?   Anyway, problem solved.

Many thanks for all advice, suggestions and help guys.  It's been a good learning curve.

In hind sight, I guess I should have posted what I did incase others would be interested.

RE-using unetbootin to make a live usb, booted with the vido fb (safe) option.

Installed to hard drive.  Downloaded the Nvidia 173.14.31 drivers from Nvidia website.

Reboot to command prompt. 

Using apt-get, remove the nividia 173.14.36 drivers,   then install the Nvidia 173.14.31 drivers using Nvidia's built in installer. (I know I'm taking risk, but it wont work otherwise, so I dont have much to loose).

Reboot, startx and change resolution and colour depth, reboot and hey presto, sorted.  1280x1024, 32million colours  job done,

Graphics card = Nvidia Geforce FX5200.

The nvidia173-173.14.36-1 included on the livecd is faulty. Your solution is good, but this is fixed with nvidia173-173.14.36-2 which should be available soon.

Awesome, I'll keep my eyes open then....incase there's any issues with the older driver and other newer bits in the 02-2013 iso.  Thanks for the heads-up.
