Nvidia twin monitor woes
« on: February 03, 2013, 11:17:53 AM »
I am trying to get my twin monitor setup working again after replacing one of the monitors which failed
but I can't get the two screens to behave as they should.

The hardware config is:

GeForce FX 5200 graphix card

IBM L150 17" monitor (assigned as CRT-0)

SPV Sunplus TV  21" LED HD TV / monitor (assigned as DFP-0)

When I configure the 21" screen it throws the config of the default monitor out completely

I either have one screen showing correctly with only a fraction of the other visible, or both screens
are unviewable. For exmple, if the default monitor is set to 1024x768 and I then set the new 21" monitor
to it's native 1440x900 the default monitor adopts a resolution of 1280x720 !!.

Conversely if I try to set the 21" monitor to 1024x768 to match the 17" it cuts off two thirds of the screen.

I am trying to use the Cloned option I used successfully before.

Cloning attempts to find a "least common denominator", maybe?  A better way to go would be to configure each monitor separately and not used a cloned configuration.  I forget right now what it's called (haven't been running KDE for a while now), but there's another mode where one monitor acts as an extension of the desktop shown on the default monitor, and each retains its own native resolution.  There's a thread around here somewhere... hang on.

This deals with dual DVI setup, but a lot of the info there might be applicable to your current situation.

And this how-to post describes a dual display setup on an ATI Radeon.  I can only imagine that the setup with Nvidia will be somewhat similar?

It's probably going to take some playing around to get things the way you want them.  Are you using the proprietary Nvidia driver?
