« on: February 03, 2013, 05:53:32 PM »
hi  there  after a fresh install of pclos  FM and upgrading to kernel    3.4.25-pclos1.pae  i went to do a systemwide update but synaptic wont work????   it just sits there with all menu items greyed  out  so i cant select or do anything ???

i searched here for help found this thread about synaptic fails to launch   http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,104551.0.html.
i tried this stuff. ( and while doing this i noticed in the system activity monitor synapitc cpu activity listed as disk sleep)  this got me as far as it starting with this error:

error: following problems were found on your system

E: could not create RPM database iterator

i close the error box  and click fix packages   then i try to reload  package information and nothing again sits there everything greyed out?????

and starting from console got this:

# synaptic

Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_hide: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
rpmdb: Thread/process 5148/3051543232 failed: Thread died in Berkeley DB library
error: db3 error(-30974) from dbenv->failchk: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 -  (-30974)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm
rpmdb: Thread/process 5148/3051543232 failed: Thread died in Berkeley DB library
error: db3 error(-30974) from dbenv->failchk: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

so im stuck !!       anyone have any ideas or suggestions???

This kernel is in testing section.  ???

With synaptic closed, delete the files pkgcache.bin and srcpkgcache.bin at /var/cache/apt. This must be done as root. Next delete the list files at /var/lib/apt/lists. Do not delete the lock file or the folder, "partial."
Start synaptic. Click reload.

Maybe your issue is caused because you did a kernel update 1st  (from testing) and then a system wide upgrade/update ?

WELL  i wiped everything.  i then  reinstalled pclos FM  ran updates which worked fine, then installed new nvidia drivers v310 that worked fine ,then  i did the kernel update and then  the synaptic problem came back.  ill keep running the new kernel , and just boot too the old kernel too do any updates.  until i can figure this out.
