"Swing" is a term that is used officially in music. It's not a "feel" or "instinct" it's an official thing for real.
Some people that play music say they just "feel" it and most who understand the "feel" typically get it right or at least close enough. But "swing" is a real thing.
Most of you have heard me blabber on about quarter notes and how they are called that because there are 4 of them in 4/4 time. Also, how when you double them you get 8th notes and then 16th notes bla bla.
That is not the entire story.
There are ways to divide up a measure that does not involve simply dividing by two.
You can split the distance between two notes by three.
If you count the distance between 1, 2, 3 and 4 like this,, "
1 trip let 2 trip let 3 trip let 4 trip let" you have whats called "8th note triplets". (
even though we know they are not 8th notes, because you can see clearly that there are 12. They are still called 8th note triplets)
Now, falling back on our rule of how the notes in a measure get doubled each time, a
16th note triplet is counted as "
1 ah trip a let and 2 ah trip a let and 3 ah trip a let and 4 ah trip a let and"
What the hell does this have to do with "Swing" you ask?
If you are counting
16th note triplets, as shown above, try to feel the beat in this way.. only count the 1s,2s,3s and 4s and then try to feel all the "ANDs" at the very end of each. If you can do this, you have discovered "Swing" LOL
