[Solved] Update-Notifier: Do NOT update!
« on: February 02, 2013, 01:49:22 PM »
Update-Notifier is giving me the following message:

"An error occured verifying upgrade;
this may be caused by held packages.

Do NOT update!

Check synaptic or try again later"

I can't see anything wrong in Synaptic - what should I be looking for?

If update-notifier is giving you the "do not update" message you need to look at the file ~/.update-notifier/apt/apt-get.log to find the reason for the message.  You can see the contents of that file by opening a terminal and entering:

Code: [Select]
cat ~/.update-notifier/apt/apt-get.log
Without that information it is impossible know exactly what advice to give, we can only guess and it is guessing that can lead to difficulties.  If you don't understand what the log file is telling you then post it here and ask for advice.

Thanks Terry.  I'll check that when I can get to that machine again.

Sorry, can't understand what that log is telling me.  Dropbox link here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3521093/apt-get.log

Any idea if it's safe to just go ahead and update with Synaptic and forget about the update notifier?

It looks fine. Go ahead and upgrade with Synaptic. If you get the broken package warning, try fix broken packages. If it can't seem to do that but shows the broken packages marked red, unmark those packages and upgrade the rest. Go back to those after the first upgrade completes.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

Thanks O-P.

I went ahead with the updates with Synaptic and all went fine.  After reboot the error message from Update-Notifier had gone.  Don't know why it got it's knickers in a twist but it's happy now.
