[SOLVED - cups was stopped] Printer Setup Problem
« on: February 02, 2013, 10:53:32 AM »
KDE Full install ..... a long term install .....  no problem the last time I used a printer ....  maybe a week ago.

I open the Printer Applet from the tray, and then Settings - Printer Configuration and I am greeted with this window ...

I have tried reinstalling the three
system-config-printer*
packages but get no change.

Any ideas?

I *think* this happened with the recent upgrade to KDE 4.9.5

A bit confusing here.

What is used here: KDE Control Center or PCLinuxOS Control Center?

It is equivalent to using KDE CC - Hardware - Printer Configuration

I think most of us are as puzzled as you...

Here's some suggestions to gather which may or may not help you debug the problem.

- are you sure CUPS is running?

- Can you send a simple ascii file to the printer (eg, a2ps /etc/hosts) and does it print?

- Have you tried to administer your printer using the CUPS web interface (http://localhost:631/)
  to see what happens?

- if you google this problem, you'll find lots of hits.   many seem to point the finger at python
and you might want to take a look at what python modules you have installed and see if they
  might be related.

Good Luck. xr200

I have been concentrating on what "an orphaned control module" might be ......

I have selected all 30 packages related to cups that are installed on this system, for reinstallation ......  will see if that makes any difference ......

...  no immediate change .....  unless a log out will affect it .....  will try that later ....  no luck ......  tried log out and tried reboot .....

must be something else

DUH!!!!!!!!!!!

cups was stopped!

problem solved.
