Looking for a deal on used 17 inch laptop.
« on: April 30, 2013, 07:48:48 AM »
I'd like to get something nice and snappy.  4 gigs of RAM, PCLinuxOS, quad core processor, 17 inch display.  I need it for surfing, GIMP image editing, scanning.

If anyone knows of such an animal, please send me word.  I've seen some systems like this refurbished at MicroCenter for $300.00.  That's in my ballpark, maybe a little less.:)

Well, after looking around, I've decided that a 17 inch is probably more screen real estate than i need.  I'll probably go with a 15.6 inch laptop.

Problem is, the systems I'm looking at are all Windows 8. Very few Windows 7 systems.  Windows 8 means the possibility of UEFI.  Which means I can't install Linux.

I want to get something used or refurbished with Win7.  Then, install PCLinuxOS.

Slim pickings because of he push of Windows 8.  And it seems manufacturers and retailers are really pushing it.

craigslist is a good place to look for a good used laptop. I have a 15.6" screen on my HP laptop and I wish I had waited and got a 17" screen. My wife has a 17" screen on her laptop and I like the extra screen real estate it has. I fixed a 17" Toshiba laptop for a neighbor, she bought it on craigslist for $60.00!

Just trying to help with some ideas.  :)

Yeah!  At that price, I'll take 3!  Or maybe 4!

RAM, disk drives and batteries are pretty easy - after that it gets really touchy. On most, anyway.

Those 3 don't qualify as "taking it apart" in my book.
If you can't see the motherboard, it's not apart yet.  ;)
