I've encountered this issue a couple of times on 32bit installs but none on the 64bit RC1.

Yesterday I performed the installation (alongside Windows 7).
Is a laptop HP Pavilion dv7 17”
Intel processor i5 480M 2,66 GHz
4 GB RAM DDR3
ATI Mobility HD 6650 1 GB DDR3

Well... I have some problems:
1. The desktop effects. Doesn’t work. I enabled some of them - the cube too ;D . None of them are working! It appears a message saying something like “18 effects can’t be enabled.”
This happens in root and also in the user accounts.
I don’t know if it might be something related with the graphic card... It’s strange because is not an old one...
2. The sound. It’s a bit low. Even Kmix set at the highest level, the sound seems to be just about 50%.

Another interesting thing is the NetApplet looks different in the root mode as the user mode one. This last one is the ticked circle as the wired connection.

Maybe I'll install the 32 bit one, to find out if it's a harware isuue...

Did you restart after enabling Desktop Effects?
Did you properly install drivers for your graphics card?

PCC -> Hardware -> Configure Video Card

Well, finally something to report on 64bit-rc1.  ;D
Sometimes Synaptic will not run from the menu.
No problem running from konsole-but the menu shortcut yields the loading icon in the taskbar then nothing.
Logout has no effect-same behavior
But restart returns to normal.
Tried to reproduce it with sleep. Nope
Will try hibernate.
hmmmm..survived suspend.
When it starts again, I'll try to notice what was happening.
Yeh, a minor thing.  ;) :)

Maybe this is a kdesu problem?
Try to forcibly terminate processes kdesu and kdesud and run Synaptic again.

Serj I'll make note of that & wait for it to recur.
Since I am the first & only victim, likely some strange conflict of my hardware/software setup.
 :)

Yes, always rebooted.

PCC->Hardware->Configure video card
- Radeon HD 2000 and later (radeon/fglrx)
- Radeon HD 2000 and later (radeonhd/fglrx)
- Radeon HD 2000 and later (vesa/fglrx)
- Radeon HD 3850 X2
- Radeon RV710 9592
- Radeon X1950 and earlier

By default is selected the first. I tried the fist three ones (don’t think the last three ones are good).
Restarted but nothing happened.
The stange thing is that after rebooting Ichecked i the changes took place...
...and nothing! It remais selected the first one. :(

I tried to open ATI Catalyst Control Center and poped up this.

The Desktop Effects settings errors I wrote about in my former post occurs if running the liveCD too

I had to turn off the laptop because the CPUs were workig at 100%. ???

Now I'm writing from my desktop.
Last night I made a try with it. The machine is
Acer Aspire M1600 AB7D
Pentium D 925 (Dual Core) 3 GHz
4 GB RAM DDR2
AMD/ATI Radeon HD 6450 Silent 1GB DDR3 (Asus)

When I bought the macine (about 7 years ago) it came as a 32 bits one with a 32 bit system (Win Vista)
Though, the processor is a 64 bits.
So I installed in this machine the RC1.
And it runs perfectly!
It appeared this issue with the Desktop Effects settings, but quickly resolved.
Till now no problems!

Now, what's the explanation?
In a two years old machine have problems, but in this older one not!
 ???  ???  ???

Aaa, and thanks for packing Kalós! BTW, neither this program runs in the laptop; on desktop is working perfectly.

The next step after selecting the driver, which is the first in your case, is a question from PCC about enabling the proprietary driver for your graphics card. You must select yes, see some info and then be prompted for a reboot. After the reboot, the proprietary driver should be correctly installed.

Is this the procedure you followed?

Yes agmg, I know. I did this several times. Nothing... ???
Don't know what to do...
Maybe I'll try the 32 bit one and see if happens the same...

I thought I remembered it mentioned for 32bit.
Well, it recurred and killing the kdesu & kdesud processes fixed it.
No idea what triggered it. I watched a DVD movie, a mkv NBA game (both smplayer & vlc)
Probably the laptop slept. But no kdesu usage.
Except.............the screensaver. Sometimes it requires pwd to awaken.  ???  ???
Would the screensaver use kdesu?

I don't know, but doubt it as it doesn't require root permissions.

I have not been able to narrow down the reason it happens on 32 bit.
It occurs rarely and I cannot induce the problem.  :(

that happened to me a couple times but in the 32 bit version, i was sure it was something related to the hard disk

one of the reasons i wanted 64 bit to reinstall machine and check partitions

possibly is a kde error, not related to 32 or 64 bit?

Since it happens to me too it's not a drive problem but KDE's.
Maybe the 4.10 version will fix this issue.

I see in the 64 bit version is available only Skype Static. While in the 32 bit I had problems with the sound in Static, in the 64 bit I have problems with the video. I have two webcams (Microsoft and Logitech). It is recognized only the Logitech, but no video. As audio input(microphone) I see the two listed.
In the 32 bit I used Skype, not Skype Static, becase it is working very well.

Could it be packed for 64 bit too?
Maybe it'll work as well as in the 32 bit... :)
Thanks
