PCLinuxOS KDE 64bit RC1
« on: February 01, 2013, 11:16:01 PM »
It's that time of year again... Texstar's Birthday!

Happy Birthday Texstar!!!

In honor of this occasion, we proudly present the first public Release Candidate of the first 64 bit PCLinuxOS ever.

The 64 bit version of PCLinuxOS was started by Texstar himself and was what he was working on when forced to take a leave of absence. Lacking the Master's touch, we poor mortals have had to struggle on, learning as we go, to try to produce a finished 64 bit version worthy of the high standards set by Texstar. We think we are very close to that goal; close enough to present this 64 bit RC for the community, as a whole, to install, and help shake out any remaining bugs.

If you have a 64 bit computer, we invite you to install the RC and run it as if it were your main system. The RC will be fully supported, just as the present official 32 bit releases are, and we invite all constructive feed back, both positive and negative, so that we can polish everything up for the official release.

Download locations are available on the official PCLinuxOS KDE 64 download page.

Excellent news. I'm sure many people have been waiting for this!
Congratulations to all who worked hard to bring us this version.
Downloading and installing right away :)

PCLOS haters were always using the lack of a 64bit version as a disadvantage of our beloved distro.
I would like to see their faces now...

Fantastic news!

I've been using test05 for about 2 months now as my main system without any issues.

A million thanks to everyone involved in creating this!

you should be able to update to whatever comes next, or use the final iso whenever that will be.
This is all very fresh stuff.  ;)

I don't usually have a /home partition, but I made an exception and transferred my /home directory from the upgraded test install to a new partition, then installed the RC1 to another partition and told the installer to use the newly created /home partition. When booting for the first time I added the root password and created the normal user with the same name and UID/GID as the previous installation. After logging in everything was just as it was on the previous installation, but fully upgraded to KDE 4.9.5. Three of my panel icons showed as blank white squares, indicating that those applications were not included with the RC. I installed each through Synaptic, right clicked each white icon, and clicked the edit choice. Having done no actual edit, I then closed the window, and each icon, in turn, changed to the proper one. Other than that, not a hitch.

Depends on whether you use hibernate or not. If you do, go with 2 GB, if not 1.5 GB should be fine.
