What has replaced printerdrake? (RESOLVED)
« on: February 01, 2013, 02:30:44 PM »
I installed 2012 Minime, updated and added programs I needed.  Trying to install a printer I found nothing had already been installed so I installed everything that related to print or printer from synaptic that looked like was relevant.  No Joy.  The Control center hardware  "set up a printer" icon just sits there.  At one time the CLI command behind all this was "printerdrake"  It seems to have disappeared.

What's next?   Any help would be appreciated.

Search in Synaptic for   task-printing   and select the one which suits or all of them - there are six options

Just downloaded dvd 2-12-2, and installed, updated it.  Found that it still says pclos 2012 during boot up, where Mineme does say 2013.  Found nothing on the full iso that wasn't already on the minime version despite it being 1.3 GB.  I still had to install firefox, thunderbird, vlc, k3b audacious, audacity, etc etc.  then found that  CUPS  was not included either, so I basically still stuck right where I was.  After I installed cups, it could get to that by localhost:631 in the browser.

I don't have the printer.  I'm doing this for a friend and all he brought was the basic box.  So I don't know whether I could install a printer from there or not

So I'm still out in left field.

The current .iso is named 2013.02
You must have gotten an older release.
Are you sure you got the regular KDE rather than MiniMe?

Aaa..., I missed something: you have to install kdm.
MiniMe is a bit poor, so, this package is missing too. ;D

Ika

MiniME is KDE and hence kdm is already installed.

To get the printer setup working in PCC you need to install system-config-printer. This is not installed by default on MiniME because it will pull in another 144 MB of packages and we assume that advanced users know that this package is needed to achieve setting up printers.

All of those are installed here ......  but the pic I posted tells me there is some problem ------  which I think is since recent updates; maybe KDE ----  I cannot be certain because it is about a week since I had a printer plugged in.

This seems to be sorted out now.

Typo about the installs.  I installed the latest KDE Minime first.  Second install was with the 2013-2  the latest full iso 1.3GB.

I found that "system-config-printer"  was not on the full KDE.  So I installed it.  Then everything seems to be OK.

Shouldn't this be included on the full KDE, since this is DVD anyway???

I think a small readme file should appear on the desktop of the Minime edition telling what must be installed in addition to preferred programs to make a fully functional system.   Such as CUPS, "system-config-printer" Samba,  etc.  That's all I can think of now that I use.  Someone with greater knowledge and depth of understanding may add to this.

Thanks for jumping in guys.   ;D  ;D ;D

I'll mark this as resolved now.  l

on my masters "system-config-printer" is installed on both, the 32bit and the 64bit KDE DVD iso images. Why did you not have it?

for the records: this is what you have to do to get the printing setup working on MiniME:
1) install: system-config-printer, task-printing (and optional task-printing-scanning)
2) reboot, or start cups-service in PCC
3) add your printer

the above will pull in 330MB of packages, adding this would result in a MiniME DVD, that is why it is not installed. Again, MiniME is for advanced users.

I have posted a separate topic in Software ......  this is a long standing full KDE install so required its own thread.  ;)

@pinoc

I have no idea why it was not on my dvd.  I just downloaded a new copy  from the nl repository this morning.  Now I did install the full kde from the first copy and I'm not 100% sure where I got it.  Just looking at the dvds they both claim to be livecd201301012720:04.   Interestingly enough I just looked at the luugnl site and it says it is 2013-02 and is dated Jan 26     ????????
