KDE Memory Use
« on: January 31, 2013, 05:53:56 PM »
I wonder what others experiences are of the memory use when running PCLOS KDE.

My reason for asking is that I have a fully updated 32 bit KDE on a recently built HTPC rig, and I have noticed it uses very little memory.

On settling at the desktop, before launching any application, it reports as using  ~225MBs (varies between 220 and 230 approx).

This is much lighter than I ever expected .....  my usual desktop uses about 600MBs.
OK, I, no doubt have a lot of services/whatever running on the desktop that I don't on the HTPC, which certainly explains most of the difference. The usage can easily creep up over 1GB at times.

Anyway, that is rather beside the point.

My question is ......  is ~225MB a usual figure for ram use for PCLOS KDE?

Thanks  ;)

after i load kde4 in my netbook it usually reports used around 300mbs

right now after having loaded avidemux, gimp, opera, jdownloader and many other tools it reports 466MiB

something pretty normal here

I just restarted the pc and it showed 304 MBs, so it is pretty much the same as µT6.

I'm use 927MB out of 991 available using LXDE*. ;D

Code: [Select]
[galen@localhost buildkernel]$ free -m
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:           991        927         63          0         99        338
-/+ buffers/cache:        489        501
Swap:         4095        181       3914
[galen@localhost buildkernel]$

*and some other stuff. ;)

Would that not be?

589MBs in use ..........  927 less 338 cached ....

Yes, of course, I forgot the cache.  ;)  My only point in posting was that I seem to use all of my 1gb of memory, no matter what desktop I am running. LXDE is definitely lighter, even with compiz, but not by as much as you might think. LXDE without compiz is 5-10 seconds faster starting the desktop, but I don't notice any performance penalty for compiz after that. Unless, of course you count restart the panel. ;)

Yes I did notice you had maxed out your RAM during that session, and had used a little swap space.  :D

lsde is lighter because it loads less things, something beneficial for users that want speed or have less resources

the boot time is not that important, we are talking about seconds now, not minutes

what i see as a problem is cached files on kde4, since it uses more things it caches more and ram gets used faster, it is just cache so when required can be reused but still when you have 1 gb of ram, this is sometimes a problem

my netbook has 1 gb and a gma 3150 so i see swap being used from time to time, especially when editing some pictures and similar stuff

i guess that you can run kde4 with 512 or 768 mbs of ram but you should have 2 gbs to run it smoothly all the time

Code: [Select]
[jpaglia@paglia-e6500 ~]$ free -m
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:          8105       7340        765          0         64       6419
-/+ buffers/cache:        855       7250
Swap:        10239        644       9595
[jpaglia@paglia-e6500 ~]$

So, looks like (7340-6419)=921 M in use... (I would say, running heavy since 8:00 AM)
