Is it cold enough..?
« on: January 31, 2013, 01:52:53 AM »
Here I am at 2:48 in the morning, and can't sleep.

Wondering if I really want to go to work this morning, considering the temperature...

sammy2fish, that is brutally cold.  What did you decide?  Work or just stay inside?  (I like the stay inside option).

Crikey. With temperatures like that, I wouldn't just stay indoors, I'd stay in bed.

That is nasty cold.  Sounds like you could get frostbite just walking to your car.
Do you get temps like that often?

That is weather that nothing much can be done in. The smart thing was to stay inside. No matter how used a person is to cold. At some point you just can't function enough to do anything productive.
There is a 5th dimension, beyond that which is known to man.It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity, between science& superstition,& it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call PCLINUXOS!

Hey Sammy,

We don't get anywhere near those temps over here.
But just in case we do, I have a pair of these (for fishing).

http://www.skee-tex.co.uk/products/skee-tex-boot-14.aspx

Sir Rannulf Fiennes (polar explorer) likes them, and that's good enough for me   :)
At least my feet would stay warm !

But I bet you have other ways of keeping the chill out over there.

I remember seeing a movie clip somewhere, where at those temperatures, a steaming hot cup of coffee thrown into the air (the Liquid not the cup) instantly freezes !

Stay warm mate.

Stay indoors. Considering wind and humidity in addition to the temperature ... Stay indoors! (I'm told that it's possible to dress for any weather, but you'll probably freeze to death before you reach a store that can sell you the necessary equipment.)

Yes it is cold enough that water thrown into the air will freeze before it hits the ground.

BUT I live in "central" Canada.  The air is dry here, unlike living next to a big lake or ocean.  Like my buddies around the Great Lakes in Ontario area.  Moisture makes the air even colder.

I still plan to go outside this afternoon and start the snow-blower a clear the drive from the storm of yesterday.

Yup.  That's here.

Not that's it's any where near that cold, at the moment, we're dealing with wild fluctuations.

Yesterday was +12 C, today is -5 with wind chill.  Everything froze overnight. < scrape > <scrape> <scrape> on the windshield, this morning...

It was almost nine years ago to the day, but we got pretty chilly back in 2004..  Here's a screen capture I took of the local cable TV channel.--  http://ve4cy.net/misc-images/41below.jpeg   -41C  with a -54 wind chill (That's a wind chill of 65 below zero Fahrenheit).

We've often hit the low -30's in the winter since then but fortunately haven't repeated that day.

It was a balmy -27C  (-16F) this morning with a wind chill of -41. :)

Of course we could always consider ourselves lucky we don't live in Oymyakon, Siberia  http://www.accuweather.com/en/ru/oymyakon/571464/weather-forecast/571464  Those aren't wind chills :)
