Cant install Dell printer
« on: January 30, 2013, 09:40:43 AM »
Please help, My new Dell V525W won't install on PCLinux on a modern PC.

But it works perfectly on Windows XP. That makes it more galling.
I've used the Control Centre/Hardware /Setup the Printers method.
My Dell is listed in the 'Select a Device' box.
It searches in vain fro drivers and eventually gives me three boxes, the middle one is 'Provide PPD file' so I click that.
The file 'Dell_V720_Series.ppd shows up (yes, I did download it from the Dell site earlier) so I click Forward. There's a page on 'Installable Options' which I left alone. Likewise 'Describe Printer'.
Then, when you think you have almost arrived, you get the bombshell - - -

Printer 'Dell-Dell-V520-Series' requires the '/usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftocontone' program but it is not currently installed.  Please install it before using this printer.

Needless to say I have searched extensively for such a file, without finding any sign of it.
It then asks me if I want to print a test page, so I agree to that. Oh no. Another box with 'Cups server error' and the message  - - -

There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'client-error-document-format-not-supported'.

So all I end up with is an icon of my printer with an orange triangle on it, and it does not work (sorry, except in Windows!)

I've spent all day on this and am thoroughly fed up. Any real help appreciated.

Talk to Dell, tell them you are using Linux, and ask what files are needed to get this printer working, and where to get them. If they direct you to *buntu deb packages, tell them your Linux is RPM based, so you either need an RPM package, or a .tar.gz archive that has all the necessary files needed.

I recall someone having an issue with a "Dell" printer some time ago.

Try from a web browser localhost:631 which is the cups setup.

Also have seen this:

@Old-Polack

Isn't it possible to install from .deb files using an application called Alien?

Only if you are exceedingly desperate and don't mind putting your entire system at risk. If you break your system doing things like that, you get to keep all the pieces, and get to glue them all back together on your own.

How many times do we have to repeat that installing anything from outside of our own repository is both frowned upon and makes your installation unsupported? Installing drivers from a manufacturer or distributor, that are properly packaged for our system, is acceptable, if there is no other source, but we certainly don't consider packages that are specifically designed for a completely foreign distribution as being properly packaged for our system.

Here is a rpm driver for your printer

I have just solved a similar problem with a Brother. (not yet put up here).

Yes ask Dell, I think you will need two files:
a ppd, and   (something like  dellxxxxxx.ppd)
a rpm       (something like  dellxxyyzz.rpm)
The rpm file will need unpacking/installing before you go to the Controlcenter.
eg.
rpm -Uvh dellxxyyzz.rpm
needs to be done in a terminal as root in same location as the downloaded rpm file.

----
While I was typing it looks like  YouCanToo  has found the  rpm !

SOLVED IT
Thank you to all of you who have chipped in here.
Here is what I ended up doing.
1. I have a spare computer with a couple of distros on it, and I used that to practice. nice to be able to do that, it doesn't matter too much if you screw up.
2. There is an automated way to install a new printer, which involves a long list of printer manufacturers. Select Dell. Guess what, there are just 4 models listed, out of hundreds of models they make. Obviuosly my V525W was not among them.
3. Try the first in the list, just being hopeful. Not surprisingly, it failed completely.
4. Being an optimist I decided to try them all, but the second on the list actually worked!!
So that's how I did it.
Thank you to all of you.

How about adding your information about the printer to our knowledge base?
