<Solved> sources.list
« on: January 29, 2013, 07:00:01 PM »
Hi to All,
Is it possible to make available a sources.list for 32 bit and 64 bit systems.
The reason I ask is because Ibiblio is a very slow server and not all users have untimed download systems. Nor enough Download capacity from  repos outside Australia.
Thank you,
Gezza

You might want to read the PClinuxOS home web page..There are reasons and instructions there to fix that.. :)
Cheers

A)What wildman said.  Here is the direct link to Pinoc's post

B)If you donate you can get access to the PASS server.  It's dirt cheap, and you get extra packages :-p

slight amendment: with pass, you get your updates a little earlier than non-pass and you also get access to a section holding packages for advanced users.

I was not aware of that.

Can you give an example or two of packages available there that are not available from the mirrors?

If memory serves there are a number of posts advising us to try not to use the Ibiblio server/repo as it's known for being slow but it does (did) serve as the master server from which all the other repos would sync from, so it can - sort of - be "forgiven" for it's speed, or lack thereof........ ;)

If you open your file manager and go to /etc/apt/ you'll see the sources.list file which lists all the repos shown in Synaptic.

There was an an updated sources.list file in Synaptic a few days ago which has removed  the Ibiblio entry.

The following  entry is the sources-list version I updated from and to

Commit Log for Sun Jan 27 16:11:07 2013

Upgraded the following packages:
apt-sources-list (1.0.5-1pclos2013) to 1.0.5-2pclos2013

==================

If you look in the above entries in my sources.list you'll notice that they all have an #  hash mark at the beginning of each line except for the heanet.ie  entry;  this "tells" Synaptic to use the heanet repo for upgrades and installations'

If you switch to another repo using the Synaptic > Setting > Repositories method, it will then remove the #  hash mark in the sources.list file thus making that particular repo "accessible" to Synaptic.

Unticking the repo you were using will add a # hash mark entry in the sources.list file thus telling Synaptic not use that repo.

Lastly, (phew)  I find it very useful to make a backup of the sources.list file as part of my regular backup routines.

Hope you can comprehend this post gezza  and that I'm not teaching my grandmother to suck eggs  ;D  ;D
