Well you can add   kdelibs  and kde-runtime   to the list of packages not installed.

You could try installing them and see what result you get.

apt-get install kdm kde-workspace-core kdelibs kde-runtime

kde-runtime: Depends: libattica.so.4
                  Depends: libnepomukore.so.4
kdelibs:        Depends: libattica.so.4

Had the same problem on Sat. on 64 bit TEST. After much searching I logged on as root removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf than rebooted. X started up on reboot but screen size was effected . Did fresh install on two different HD's with same conditions. Did 214 upgrades with no errors reported at end?
32 bit notebook is at KDE 4.9.5 and all is fine.

I have never tried to rebuild KDE in this fashion so I don't know how much it will take  :(

There must be a better way of doing it ........

Hi:

I gave this idea a try, after the reboot I had a blank screen.  Reboot again into safe mode, XFdrake reset the vid card and I am back to where I was.

Thanks

Root to su
su-> password -> enter

then type: XFdrake
search for a xorg driver
you have to select: nouveau

then reboot your system

post your the result.

I couldn't get this out of my mind, sao I grabbed a new Vid Card, an ATI to eliminate the nVidia (which I had a ton of trouble getting configured when I first put this system together.  Low and behold, no difference!

Thanks

Pete

First question: when did you last upgrade?
2nd question which mirror are you using?
Have you read http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,87378.0.html?

I upgraded to 2012 some months ago... maybe as early as 1Q 2012.  When I had a problem with LibreOffice the other day and attempted to upgrade, the repository had bumpkiss, so I found the link you provided, which I read and set to ibiblio.

Now boys to be fair, I have been using this OS for at least two years, and have used this forum a few times to fix problems.  So I just opened my Google Wallet and purchased a PASS Server access.... whoopie!!!!

That said, I'm still hoping to find a backdoor to solving my problem without doing a new build!

Thanks

Pete

apt-get install task-kde4-minimal
Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(

I'm not sure if this will work from your terminal;
try logging in as root
su
run synaptic
if it loads, check your history to see what files were loaded in your last update.
It could shed light on the state of your system pre-update. And shows kde file versions IIRC.

In the above example, do not type run synaptic.
Just type synaptic and hit ENTER.

Yes ....  running Synaptic should work .......  thought of it last night in bed  :(

why did I not think of it yesterday?  :(

Select KDM as the first package to be installed, along with its dependencies.
