full monty sound issue
« on: January 27, 2013, 09:24:29 AM »
i too am having a sound issue. I loaded the full monty newest release yesterday on a buddys puter and I cant get no sound on startup, web browser or anywhere. I've check  the mixer, nothing is muted and audio setting i get sound thu pulse audio test tab but thats the only way. I've been into the cp  and checked the drivers enabled pulse-audio checked for updates but no go.

now here is the kicker, I put the newest on my tower at first i did not have sound I enabled pulse audio updated flashplayer and i have sound on mine.
I forgot to mention on both towers I am not using   the hdmi sound we are using the plug in for sound on the back.

Turn off the HDMI sound card in the Config tab of PulseAudio, log out and in again.

You said you have Pulse Audio installed and enabled.
Hopefully you have been using Pulse Audio Volume Control to manage the sound streams and devices.
On its Config tab, disable HDMI if it is not being used.
Log out and in again.

Have a look here, maybe it can help:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,112440.0.html

Per your post and the link and i did read it did it work. I found the file you are speaking of and I have not changed anything yet but here it is
  • [Element Speaker]
    switch = mute
    volume = off
    Quote
    take out off and replace it with merge?

    Ok i went into his computer and changed the files to merge with no luck under root. Now what i discovered is I do have the analog sound set in the config for the mixer. Here is the error I get when i try to open alsa mixer thru the sound tab.
    Quote
    alsa mixer function snd_ctl_open failed

    now as i explained on my tower and not his i can open alsa mixer with no error. His is setting up different. anyone know of a remedy I am getting in the above quote. I think this may be the problem

    [Element Desktop Speaker]
    switch = mute
    volume = off
    Quote
    and u suggest I might have to change this one also to merge?

    [Element Front]
    switch = mute
    volume = merge
    override-map.1 = all-front
    override-map.2 = front-left,front-right

    [Element Rear]
    switch = mute
    volume = merge
    override-map.1 = all-rear
    override-map.2 = rear-left,rear-right

    [Element Surround]
    switch = mute
    volume = merge
    override-map.1 = all-rear
    override-map.2 = rear-left,rear-right

    [Element Side]
    switch = mute
    volume = merge
    override-map.1 = all-side
    override-map.2 = side-left,side-right

    [Element Center]
    switch = mute
    volume = merge
    override-map.1 = all-center
    override-map.2 = all-center,all-center

    [Element LFE]
    switch = mute
    volume = merge
    override-map.1 = lfe
    override-map.2 = lfe,lfe

    [Element CLFE]
    switch = mute
    volume = merge
    override-map.1 = all-center
    override-map.2 = all-center,lfe

    .include analog-output.conf.common

appricate your help and hope i dont get scolded for placing this  in your post and not just do a reply to the thread.

You didn't post the output of lspci | grep audio (they are two different commands) :)

Seems to me that sound devices are properly recognized by PCLinuxOS.
But I see the chipset is ALC887. Guess this chipset is causing problems on many Linux users.

Can you completely uninstall pulseaudio (using task-pulseaudio-remove from Synaptic), reboot and try to run alsamixer again?

Before that, go to PCC -> System -> Users and check if the user is included in the "audio" group.
