I wanna start this post giving my big kudos to the amarok 2.7 “minor tune”. Generally speaking, as developers we know our software life cycle includes major breakages as well as minor tunes. As users, we only understand things like speed, features, fast new astonishing releases and so on

rekonq just comes out from a major breakage. This was really needed in my opinion to let easier (possible?) properly maintain codebase and to experiment all the new features we have in mind and were not possible (without kludges) in 1.x.

So here is what happened in this “less than a month” period, also thanks to 2.0 breakage:

BUGS FIXED

    kpart “half window” problem
    spellchecking (working against qtwebkit 2.3 beta1)
    webapp with window favicon
    default application’s locale for date formatting in history
    history ordering by date (and not by number of visits, sorry )
    one stupid crash while adding a favorite

FEATURES BACK

    restored usual web inspector position at the bottom
    option to open tab at the end
    restored bookmark middle click action
    edit toolbars
    shorcuts configuration panel

NEW FEATURES

    better kpart integration
    remove history items from history page
    improved icon management (snappier)
    some work to let work better Google Bookmark sync

This signs also our first release with our new development model where no branches are created and master contains everytime the next code to release. Next target: rekonq 2.2, with another bunch of fixes and minor features coming.

Last, but not less important, this is first rekonq after QtWebkit 2.3 beta1 release. Great kudos also to “qtwebkitters” for this milestone reached and an advise: if you can, please upgrade your qtwebkit copy to it.

In a couple of hours testing, I found more than 10 bugs reported in rekonq bugzilla no more reproducible against qtwebkit 2.3b1.

Rekonq 2.2

It’s that time again, release time! In this period it seems very easy to round some edges and push up things.

And this because of the great contribution people is giving us via patches, comments (also on this blog), bug reports… I cannot remember a release where I coded myself so little and checked patches and suggestions so much
The result is this rekonq 2.2 release!

So, what’s new in rekonq 2.2?

Adblock Improvements

Well, adblock coding is really not fun. But given some nice visible results, everything start to seem better.

So, let’s see the differences:

This easy test can be found here  These guys really had a nice idea about testing their product. I just took advantage from.

Closed tabs page

Yes, it’s back! I had to fix code due to our internal API change for the 2.x series. But everyone now should have this nice feature back. I know it was one of the most requested feature. You probably may got used to
Now you have it!

Nepomuk2 support

You may know that rekonq stores info about bookmarks (NOT the bk itself!) in nepomuk. If you have kde 4.10 installed (minimum requirement for this optional feature) you can click on the star urlbar icon and edit them. Unfortunately this costed us nepomuk1 support. We really cannot support 2 nepomuk versions. I’m sorry if you are having problems cause of this.



Boomarks menu

This is another strong request from rekonq users gone back. You have the same bk menu in the general tools menu and as an action(menu) to append to your urlbar. Maybe you need a screenshot to understand my ramblings



Minor improvements

We had work and clean ups in various areas. KGet support has been improved letting it decide the destination folder. Lindsay cleaned up our spell checker trying to let it be faster and less intrusive. She, Michael, Pali, Dimitrios provided patches for a lot of small things they would fix and improve.  This resulted in more than 20 real bugs resolved.

So, long story short. Upgrade to 2.2! And enjoy…

PS: Given we have some more “minor” features to code & push in master, I planned a 2.3 for next month. Hope you won’t be disappointed

Nice! rekonq 2.1 is not that crash-happy like older versions. Especially if you are not using Flash. Better kget integration is something that i was waiting for.

rekonq 2.2.1

Very fast note to just say I released rekonq 2.2.1 this afternoon.

It is just rekonq 2.2 with a “dot 1″ at the end

Naaahh… it is rekonq 2.2 with just 1 bugfix (2 lines of code) letting the bookmark toolbar sub-folders work again.

rekonq && webapps

Just to show a short video with a local page (to eventually add to rekonq website) collecting some external links of the most famous webapps (working in rekonq).

This basically show a new feature: the ability to open links as webapps (and to install them).

rekonq 2.3.0

Here we are, finally ready for the 2.3.0 release. After the 2.2 one we targeted some things to fix and features to implement. We now are in the “almost done” level, meaning that quite all things have been done and that the code push is (hopefully) release level.

So, what’s new in rekonq 2.3.0? Here is the “shopping list”:

- bookmarks && history panels, given all the requests about this feature return, it has been implemented in rekonq 2.x fashion:



- some work on web view contextual menus

- activities support (at least being activities aware on opening windows)
- activity daemon support (notifying there url && window title)

- private browsing: stop saving sessions && sharing sessions cookies by tabs of the same window

- open url as webapp option. This “easy” feature has to be inserted in a wider view. So, please wait for my next post about it to.

- session saving (load/save/rename sessions). As you guessed, you can now decide to save a session for future use, rename it and load when you prefer. Moreover, you can decide to start rekonq showing the session dialog, loading one of the saved sessions.



- some work on respecting one more of the thousand millions kde “wide” settings.

- urlbar look change (not finished). SSL icon on the left as major browsers. coloring url text (yet) missing. We have problems when the urlbar is full and text start to “scroll” on the left. And I’d really like to have an “easier” widget here, allowing rich (colored) text, instead of pixel perfect subpainting.



Favorites (fast) management, the “opera” way (bye bye “love” icon). Just click on the star icon to set bookmarks and/or favorites.



- appmenu-qt support. Just a missing dbus registration from the rekonq window. Easy to do (2 loc), hard to understand.



- fixes fixes fixes.

rekonq, working on extension supportBecause a video sometimes is better than words…

Just a mini video showing the 'state of art' working to support chrom* extensions. The part implemented is the easy one. Fun is just starting...

- we can manage chrome extensions (I just copied examples from here  ):    we can recognize unpacked extensions, install, enable/disable. (oops.. uninstall/delete missing. Adding next days..)

- we can interpret (a bit) the version 2 manifest.json inside
- we can manage browse actions
- we can manage page actions
- we can open popups

So, the first easy step is done. Now what to really say we are supporting chrome extensions? Here is my todo list:

- support chrome object and (a subset of) its API (very long task)

- support the callback mechanism (really hard, this is the trick missing to say we’ll reach one day our goal)

- implement a way to retrieve extensions (support chrome extensions site? seems problematic. Add a ghns layer? Should do the trick. Probably…)

- ehm… port/implement extensions
