KDE 4.9.5 update

I said nothing to report. Actually, there was, but I just dealt with it and forgot about it (why testers are no good to ordinary users!)

On my laptop I like to keep the users hidden on the log-in screen to reduce the chance of someone knowing which accounts to try to break until they've got in as root (OK, I know, single user, but maybe they don't know about that).

The list was restored and I had to go into SystemSettings to hide it again.

If update-notifier is giving you the "do not update" message you need to look at the file ~/.update-notifier/apt/apt-get.log to find the reason for the message.  You can see the contents of that file by opening a terminal and entering:

cat ~/.update-notifier/apt/apt-get.log
Without that information it is impossible know exactly what advice to give, we can only guess and it is guessing that can lead to difficulties.  If you don't understand what the log file is telling you then post it here and ask for advice.

Thanks, Terry.  Looked at apt-get.log from above and saw kde-multimedia-help, which was obsolete because of removing kde-multimedia-core.  I removed kde-multimedia-help, and now I see 101 updates, not the DO NOT UPDATE!.

Will now update, but the question from my post #55 remains:

Last time was a bit of a struggle to update, so I want to make sure I do this right.

Prior poster said to backup settings.  Which ones and how (just copy and rename -old?)?

I notice it got installed here too ......  with an entry in Video section of menu ......  but it does not work.
Easy solution for me too .....  uninstall  
Takes out  kde-multimedia as expected.

Yup, when I opened Dragon Player and drilled down to where my videos are located they didn't load  but It works by right clicking a file and then choosing Dragon Player (though it's not a very satisfactory solution )

Did you click the play icon? When I open Dragon Player, then dig through the directory tree to the location of the videos, and select one, once the selection window disappears, the loaded file shows at the bottom of the screen. I click the play icon, and the selected video starts. In other words, it does load, it just doesn't auto-play. There may be a setting to get it to auto-play, I just haven't found it.

Your opinion that right clicking a video file and selecting Open with --> Dragon Player is not very satisfactory, is exactly the opposite of mine. To me that is the preferred method of launching any video, and moving your preferred player to the top of the list allows a single left click on the video file to open it with the pre chosen player.

Dragon Player works fine on the home desktop spare computer system.

Just a minor note: I noticed a day after updating to KDE 4.9.5 that I have Dragon Player installed. 

Essentially no other problems as stated in a earlier post, bit odd I felt as have never had Dragon Player installed on my System. No Application Launcher Menu Icon to launch it in obvious sections 'Video', or 'Sound'.

Not a biggy, can just uninstall it, or make a launcher suppose. ?     Have MPlayer, KPlayer, (rarely used) and mostly use VLC.

Dragon Player is part of the group package kde-multimedia, available from PCmenu -> Video
and can be uninstalled by uninstalling kde-multimedia-dragonplayer which of course will also remove (if installed) kde-multimedia and task-kde but that doesn't matter because these are "empty" packages.

The reason I raised the issue that I had Dragon Player installed after this update was I had no "Launcher" entry in the Video menu, plus I'd setup to have VLC play videos when left clicked on one. I was surprised when Dragon Player opened, and couldn't find any shortcut, or Launcher, so posted, and followed pinoc's advice.
Seems all is ok, however I don't want 'invisible' programs on my System obviously.

If you mean reply #35 I think it is referring to the ~/.kde4 folder which holds your current KDE desktop settings.  Just make a copy of it somewhere as a backup.
