Re: KDE 4.9.5 update
« Reply #45 on: January 29, 2013, 07:12:10 AM »
I reinstalled KDE last night, after having (essentially) the same KDE system up and running since KDE 4.3 ... fully updated along the way, of course. This is on a Lenovo G530 laptop, Intel DuoCore, 2.1 GHz, 3 GB RAM, Intel graphics.

Just a report on how my installation went ...

1) Created Live USB (using Just17's excellent PCLinuxOS Live USB Creator) with 2012.12.

2) First boot from Live USB displayed crash window report from plasma-desktop immediately when arriving to the KDE desktop. Everything seemed to be working ok, so I closed out the window and proceeded.

3) Set up wireless.

4) Install 2012.12. Except that my screen went black about 2/3 of the way into the installation, except for the DrakLive Installer window, which now was frozen. I waited about 20 minutes, and with no further progress, did a hard reboot via the power switch (no other way out).

5) Reboot from Live USB. Immediately upon arrival to KDE desktop, the same crash report window from plasma-desktop was displayed. Closed out the window and proceeded.

6) Set up wireless.

7) Install 2012.12 again. This time, the installer progressed all the way through without any mishaps.

8 ) Reboot from the newly installed system, via laptop's hard drive. (Phew! No crash report window! Yay!)

9) Run Synaptic. With the KDE 4.9.5 recently added to the repos, I had 227 updates to apply.

10) About 1/2 way through running Synaptic, plasma-desktop crashed again. This time, it took out my panel. Synaptic was still functioning, so I let it complete. Once it was done, I logged out of KDE and restarted the computer.

11) KDE now comes back up, but my panel is AWOL. Right click on the desktop > Unlock Widgets > Right click on the desktop > New Panel > Default. Woohoo! I have my panel back.

12) After tweaking my "default" panel back to the PCLinuxOS defaults, I notice that my NetApplet icon is not displaying in my System Tray. However, that is another chapter in the saga, and you can read about it here.

Overall, my computer did seem more responsive after the update to KDE 4.9.5 ... once I finally got there. But I wonder would a new user  have known what to do in the face of the obstacles that I had to detour around? Or, would they just continue on to the next distro on their list to try?

I'm not trying to create a firestorm here. But if this is what some new users are facing -- even if it's only 20% of new users -- that represents quite a number of new users who aren't sticking around and giving PCLinuxOS a fair shake.

Update notifier is telling me DO NOT UPDATE!

what do I do now? Last time I wound up doing
a full install to make it right. Don't want a repeat.

I had the same problem. The solution for me was to remove kde-multimedia-core which is an old version. I no longer see it so cannot tell you which version.

Removing it takes out k3b (and soundkonverter if you have it installed). You can then update to 4.9.5 and reinstall k3b. Soundkonverter will not reinstall.

Anyway, that's how it worked for me.

It did work after all, thanks Martin.

Turns out you have to ignore the warning and do the update anyway.

Just updated to KDE 4.9.5 and all looks good.  I was surprised to find that all my desktop customizations were still there. But... I do use Octave and found that when I tried to mark it for installation, I get this message:

Quote
octave:
 Depends: libcruft.so.1
 Depends: liboctave.so.1
 Depends: liboctinterp.so.1
Depends: libqhull.so.5  but it is not installable

I hope that's fixable.  Otherwise, great job on the updates!

Just a minor note: I noticed a day after updating to KDE 4.9.5 that I have Dragon Player installed.  ???

Essentially no other problems as stated in a earlier post, bit odd I felt as have never had Dragon Player installed on my System. No Application Launcher Menu Icon to launch it in obvious sections 'Video', or 'Sound'.

Not a biggy, can just uninstall it, or make a launcher suppose. ?     Have MPlayer, KPlayer, (rarely used) and mostly use VLC.

Dragon Player is part of the group package kde-multimedia, available from PCmenu -> Video
and can be uninstalled by uninstalling kde-multimedia-dragonplayer which of course will also remove (if installed) kde-multimedia and task-kde but that doesn't matter because these are "empty" packages.

I also have Update notifier telling me DO NOT UPDATE!  I removed kde-multimedia-core, as suggested above, then restarted update notifier - still get DO NOT UPDATE.  I rebooted, get the same thing.  Looked for kde-multimedia-core in synaptic to make sure actually deleted, and it is not in synaptic at all.

I am using PASS.

Last time was a bit of a struggle to update, so I want to make sure I do this right.

Also, prior poster said to backup settings.  Which ones and how (just copy and rename -old?)?

Any suggestions?  Thanks!

If update-notifier is giving you the "do not update" message you need to look at the file ~/.update-notifier/apt/apt-get.log to find the reason for the message.  You can see the contents of that file by opening a terminal and entering:

Code: [Select]
cat ~/.update-notifier/apt/apt-get.log
Without that information it is impossible know exactly what advice to give, we can only guess and it is guessing that can lead to difficulties.  If you don't understand what the log file is telling you then post it here and ask for advice.

Terry.

Yup, when I opened Dragon Player and drilled down to where my videos are located they didn't load  but It works by right clicking a file and then choosing Dragon Player (though it's not a very satisfactory solution )

There is an entry in my video section as well

I dunno.  DragonPlayer works fine on my Lenovo Notebook.  I'll check my desktop set up tonight.

Well done, Pinoc!

I updated three systems - PCs - all without a hiccup.

Two minor issues:
* The KDE auto login settings were gone and had to be set again.
* Adding new shortcut to desktop, either by right-clicking desktop or choosing Add to Desktop from menu adds link with root permissions. (This does not happen when adding through ~/username/Desktop, of course.)

Apart from such trifling matters, this has probably been the smoothest KDE upgrade I have ever done, so kudos to Pinoc; good job, mate!

PS: QT-creator issue with new GUI project (mentioned elsewhere) is also fixed now!  ;D

Cheers!
