[SOLVED] Long boot on Toshiba NB205
« on: January 27, 2013, 12:34:42 AM »
pclos -2012.12 lxde on toshiba NB205 Intel Atom processor. Dual boot with Winxp on sda5 (/) and sda7 (/home)

Installation went smooth , updated apt-sources-list, and then updated. reboot. Very long boot time. (about two minutes to login).

dmesg here ->http://pastebin.com/PBig3gGi

Also curious. why do these dmesg not have time stamps?

Any ideas appreciated.

are subsequent reboots slow also, or just the initial one after install &  updates?

Various times but none shorter than about 2 minutes. This morning was just under 5 minutes. from OS selection to login screen.

This is quite a change from my normal experience. WinXP boots to login in 22 seconds. Of course the desktop is not ready for another 10 -15 sec after login but this is really turned around from my experience with dual boots. Usually Windows is the long boot.

Maybe some clues:

1. Seems to hang for long time at loading intrd.ram or something to that effect. I can jot down exact point if necessary.

2. lots of HD thrashing compared to normal boots on other systems
3. Noticed this morning blinking cursor froze while #1 going on and when I touched touchpad it resumed boot.
4.  During sessions, x seems to hang occasionally.( touchpad / cursor non-responsive for several seconds).

5.  This is the installation where I had to modify 50-synaptics.conf before I could run it live before installation. See sticky in lxde forum.

Wondering if touchpad is still causing issues, but can´t  find touchpad fix after update. I can do it manually but looking for that fix. This may NOT be the problem. Just guessing.

Any ideas appreciated.

that cpu is a bit slow, slower than my toshiba nb255

my machine is booting to kde4 in 1 minute and 40 seconds more or less

those two minutes souns ok to me, lxde is lighter but not that light considering the cpu you have

what kernel are you using?

in a console write uname -r to see what it reports

if you are using a kernel 3.2, please try 2.6.38.8-pclos3.a64 or bfs

no difference with new kernel you suggested. 3:52 boot time. Seems to hang at :

initrd (hd0,4) /boot/initrd.img
Linux initrd@ 0x379510000, 0x69 eb3b065 bytes]

If  I don do anything it will sit there until I touch touchpad then more HD thrashing and then :

acpid: starting rpw proc fs
acpid: 5 rules loaded

then a few  more then to login screen.

then,  it must be having problems loading a service, can you check what services are being loaded in the configure your computer?

OK, in the interest of perspective.  Loaded LM13 xfce and same issue - long boot time. We both prefer lxde and plan to reload pclos 2012.12 lxde but in meantime maybe this will help.

1. This is dual boot w/ WinXP -  did all necessary defrag and chkdsk prior to install
2. WinXP boots in 22 sec / pclos and LM boot in 135 sec. This is completely backwards from our experience.

The following are dmesg and fstab from LM13 but to my recollection, the hang messages and fstsab were the same from pclos 2012.12 lxde

According to dmesg timestamps, issue is with problem mounting filesystem but google show only disable/remove ureadahead  which only temporarily  fixes issue:

i installed kde4 64 bit and this thing is booting under 1 minute and 20 seconds, xp is another story, i don't use it much

no idea how to help you, maybe run fsck but if you created the partition and you have disabled services then no idea what to suggest

Reinstalled  2012.12-lxde-mini.

Finally ran across two  threads suggesting two things and they seem to have worked. Boot time is now down from about 2 minutes to a fanstastic 24 seconds thus rivaling WinXP.

I had not thought of solutions before b/c I also have a toshiba NB305 where these solutions DO NOT make a difference. Go figure!

1. In BIOS set HD from AHCI to  compatibility mode. ( maybe kernel)
2. Disable legacy USB ( have never had to do this in years of installing Linux)

One observation maybe mods will make sticky. Option #3 in fix touchpad I believe still has incorrect syntax for left/right/bottom/top EDGE.

After a complete update boot time has increased to about 45 seconds due to kernel trying to load 4-5 modules ¨already on this kernel¨ How do I keep these modules from trying to load?

Thanks

weird, i couldn't install pclinux on my netbook until i disabled ahci, that is why i never mentioned

i guess that newer kernels are better handling that option

if you identify the modules you can remove them, possibly amd or nvidia drivers?  since that is a atom with a intel gma you can remove those safely

also you can remove virtualbox stuff if you are not going to run virtualbox

Apparently that is what ¨compatibility¨ mode does is disable AHCI. I didn think of it either b/c I DID NOT have to disable it on my NB305 to install pclos 2012.12.

Will look into why the added boot time after complete upgrade. 45 sec is still way better than the original 2+ minutes. but 24 sec was nice right after install.

Thanks

check services and modules that could be removed

do you use a ssd? your boot times are really good

will check. No SSD. Just old school 5400 sata drive. A number of modules show up in lsmod being used by ¨0¨ but not the ones trying to load at boot. Currently just timing stuff to see what really added the extra 15-20 seconds.

I notice dmesg in lxde does not show timestamp like in Mint. Is there a way to activate that?
Also google shows bootchart not working for lxde/kde. Any news on that front?

Thanks
