SOLVED -Thoughts on re-installing
« on: January 26, 2013, 12:05:00 AM »
I have just reinstalled PcLos 2012 from an August 12/2012 disk and noticed a couple of things that might disconcert anyone coming to PcLinuxos for the first time

In the disk partitions to use section the  "Custom Disk Partitioning" appears below the bottom edge of the Dialogue box and is not visible without scrolling down.

Also I didn't see any suggestion to  set up an internet  connection before using Synaptic. This would seem to be obvious to anyone who has installed before but may not be so  to a newcomer.

AND -  most importantly  - I can't find Freecell again (Kde-Patience or KDEpat - as it used to be). This happens to me nearly every time I reinstall and I can't possibly do without my daily fix. ::)

There is something called xpat2 in the repos--I don't know if the Klondike in it is like the one in KPatience.  I would miss KPatience, if I didn't
have it already.

Back again after doing a bit of research:  Look under kde-games-kpat in synaptic.

Thanks Doug --  I've already looked at xpat2 but that's not the Freecell I'm looking for.

Searched for kde-games-kpat but it's just not there. I've already searched everything beginning with kde but no luck. I've also used a number of different repos.

Did you follow the instructions to correctly update your sources list?

Use the Search link and enter kpat. it's there.

Thanks for the replies

agmg - Yes

Old-Polack - A bit of deja-vu here!

Yes I can see it's there on your setup but whichever repo I try, including ibiblio, I get the message Could not download repo indexes. A further message says

W: Release file did not contain checksum information for http://distro.ibiblio.org/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/base/pkglist.kde4
W: Release file did not contain checksum information for http://distro.ibiblio.org/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/base/release.kde4

Is there a clue there?

In Synaptic, go to Settings -> Repositories.
Select the Repository you are currently using.
Check in the Section(s) part of the window.
You should have the following: main updates nonfree kde games xfce4 (you probably have kde4)

What method did you follow to get the updated apt-sources-list?
The kde4 section was changed to kde since the upgrade from KDE 4.6.5 to 4.8.3 (August 15, 2012)

Why didn't you use the more recent 2012.12 iso for your installation?

He cannot get a new apt-sources list if Synaptic cannot connect to a mirror.

So the first thing to be done is to manually edit one of the repository entries in Synaptic to allow connection.

The needed info is in the first page of the linked thread previously provided

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,87378.0.html

For instance .....  http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/   ........  note the two instances of 'pclinuxos' in the path.

Yes, you have an old sources.list version that still lists a kde4 section. We haven't had that section since last August, when it was changed to kde, without the 4, for the upgrade to kde 4.8.3. We are now at kde 4.9.2.

You need to reinstall from the 2012.12 image released in December, then change that sources.list following the instructions found on the first post of this thread;

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,87378.0.html

Once that's done you can upgrade fully, and install kpat, if it's not already there. Actually I think it is pre installed on that image.

Just noticed something that might help...

When I open Synaptic to a full screen I see that all of the distros have, in the Sections part, the phrase

main updates non free kde games XFCE

edit - I posted this before seeing your post agmg

Not sure what you mean by "updated apt-sources-list" I installed then I did the usual full update (350mb), Isn't that the same as "updated apt-sources-list"?

I used my old disk because the last time I looked there was some trouble with downloading the isos.

Thanks Old-Polack. That seems to answer my problem. And agmg, doug and Just17 -  many thanks.
