How do I ditch the printer?[SOLVED]
« on: January 23, 2013, 05:35:03 PM »
Running LXDE 3.2.18
I have a epson inkjet installed by default, don't know why as I don't have an epson printer.  I cannot figure out how to un-install this printer.  Clicking on the printers icon in the control center causes nothing to happen.  I cannot add nor remove printers using this icon.

There is nothing in Synaptic installed that looks specific for an Epson inkjet.

Printing is just fine, after original install of this OS, it found my other-brand network printer and automagically installed it.

This is not a problem, though it does have me curious.

You say that you have a network ?  Is it one one of the computers on the network ?

Yes the computer is on a LAN.  The LAN does not have an Epson inkjet on it, never has.  None of the other computers have an Epson attached.  I threw out the Epson a decade ago (it was a genuine turd) before any of the computers I have now were here.  All of the computers are running recent versions of Linux and only this one thinks there is an Epson, except I can't click on it and delete it.

How do I ditch the printer?

In my city there is a place called Sarcan.  They take ALL unwanted electronic components, and recycle or dispose of them... just for you...

They also pay you for all refundable disposable containers.

Maybe I'm not making myself clear.  This computer thinks I have an Epson printer.  I don't have one.  I cannot get rid of it.  I cannot bring up the option of removing it.  Any suggestions?

localhost:/631
bash: localhost:/631: No such file or directory

That message seems odd, because I think that's where my HP printer should be.  and it works!

Not sure if I made this point clear... there does not seem to be a means for removing any printer, not just the bogus Epson.

In the Control Center, clicking on the printer icon for adding or removing a printer does nothing.

It is no file or directory found because that is not the correct command.....  In your web browser enter localhost:631

it should display properly then.  This is not a bash command but a URL for the web browser.
NOTE that there is no "/" between the ":"  and the "631".   localhost is the machines address and the :631 is the port we want to talk to.  It could also been done using  127.0.0.1:631    FWIW the port 631 is for CUPS administration.

Let me get this straight. Opening "Configure Your Computer / Hardware / Set up the printer(s), the print job queues, ...

and then right clicking the printer in question, does not give you the option to delete it?

What happens if, under Hardware > Set up the printer(s)... you remove the check-mark from Discovered Printers (under the View menu)?

EDIT
In the same section, under Server > Settings, you could remove the check-mark from Show printers shared by other systems (if you do not want to have printers automatically added when discovered on the network)...

Having trouble inserting an image of page.
There is no 'view' in the menu.  There are no 'server>settings'.  There are no printers to be shared nor to be discovered here.  There is only one network printer and it is not an Epson.  Please refer to post#9.

What kind of havoc should I expect if I re-install the lxdecc?  Also, I seem to have the gnome control center installed too.  should that be here?

FYI...
Installing the latest LXDE fixed this issue.
