Corrupt Firefox File
« on: January 23, 2013, 05:06:26 AM »
I am having trouble uploading a picture/graphic to a WordPress Blog with my Firefox Browser. When I reach the point of choosing a file from my computer, nothing is shown. If I try to click out of the upload page, eventually a message is shown and the FF is terminated.

When I reopen FF, all of the tabs that were open are again shown.  I did not have this problem when I started using it last July.  I think the problem occurred late last November.  I did not report it because I thought maybe it would be solved with some Synaptic update.  Also I am using Chromium browser and can switch to it when I want to upload a picture. The uploading works fine with Chromium.   Finally I decided that switching back and forth was annoying and have decided to ask for help to fix this problem.

Yesterday I tested the uploading with my other user.  The option to upload in FF with the other user works fine.  The conclusion is that something is corrupt in FF in my main user.

I do not want to reinstall FF.  I hope a solution can be found.

Thanks

Have you tried creating a new Firefox profile to see if it still occurs?

Under the ~/.mozilla/firefox folder, you can see a profile.ini file and a folder with a name like 1iy60s8h.default

You can backup these and start Firefox again.
You will lose all add-ons, extensions and bookmarks.
Bookmarks can be restored but add-ons and extensions have to be reinstalled.

Start Firefox and a new profiles.ini file will be created. Also a new folder with a strange name :P
Check to see if the problem still exists. If not, start reinstalling your add-ons and extensions one by one.
Maybe one of those is causing the problem.

Also, for your bookmarks, go to the old "strange-name-folder" and copy the file bookmarks.html file to your new "strange-name-folder". This will restore your bookmarks.

Off course there is a much better way :P

Go to Help -> Troubleshooting options
There you have the option to Reset Firefox.

Remember before proceeding: you will lose all add-ons/extensions currently installed in your browser!
You will have to install them from scratch.
The only thing that Firefox will (try to) keep after the reset is History & Bookmarks, Passwords, Form History and Cookies.
It might be a good idea to backup your bookmarks, though, before proceeding with resetting your Firefox.

This option is similar to deleting your current profile and creating a new one.

In addition to agmg's advice I use the FEBE Firefox add-on which lets me backup all my add-ons (and lots more if required) either manually or at pre-defined days/times.

I also use the CLEO (Compact Library Extension Organizer) add-on.

CLEO is a Firefox extension that works with FEBE to package any number of extensions/themes into a single, installable .xpi file.

Then it's just a matter of pointing Firefox at the single  xpi file created by CLEO to add all the add-ons back in one go

Never stop learning!
I wasn't aware that this kind of add-ons/extensions existed. :)
I guess there is something for everything :P

But, on the other hand, I only had to restore Firefox once and I only use 3 or 4 add-ons/extensions, so it's not big trouble to reinstall them.

Thanks for this info, though!

OK Thanks for all the information.  :o :o

I am going to study it over.  It will probably take me 2 days.  ;D   Then come back with the questions.

It is not something I have to do in a big rush so want to make sure I make the right decisions.
I have saved my bookmarks and made note of the few addons  I have.

I took the plunge.   :)  And now the upload feature seems to work and bookmarks all in place.  Need to do a few adjustments  and add a few things, but that just gives me something to do.

Thank you!!
