https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Virtualization

So quoting www.virtualbox.org
Virtualizers such as VirtualBox, on the other hand, can achieve near-native performance for the guest code, but can only run guest code that was written for the same target hardware (such as 32-bit Linux on a 32-bit Windows host)

So a 32 bit guest on a 64 bit host may not run.

Yes it will, but a 64 bit guest on a 32 bit host will not.

Actually, I run 64-bit guests on my 32-bit PCLOS install quite often (just did some yesterday to test restoring a server to disparate HW)...

That quote didn't do justice to "emulation" vs "virtualization" (IMNSHO).

Emulation:
Able to run different architectures (such as PowerPC, or M68000 on x86), such as MAC or Amiga emulators.

Virtualization:
Allow concurrent but different codesets for the same architecture (x86 Windows or x86 BSD on x86 Linux).

I would guess from that, that you are running your 32 bit host on a 64 bit CPU.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

Yes.

The hardware (CPU) must be 64-bit capable (I do not believe there are any 32-bit processors with hardware virtualization support that might need to be enabled in the BIOS).  That support has to be enabled, and it is that which exposes the capability to the hyper-visor for exploitation.

I've marked this as solved as it is no longer relevant.  The latest ISO, pclinuxos-kde-2013.02.iso, installs just fine from both hard disk file and from DVD.  So whatever the problem was with the previous version the latest version is OK.
