Firefox 18.0 menu response time (Sorted)
« on: January 22, 2013, 11:02:33 PM »
Has anyone else noticed that after visiting a few websites the menus eg Bookmarks and it's sub-menus gets slower and slower to open, down to several seconds until it's open after clicking. With a similar slowness for any entry to be highlighted by the cursor.

I am just trying to establish if it is just my browser or others are experiencing it as well so as to plan a course of action.

many thanks for any observations

I'm still using version 16.02 so can't try duplicating it

Have you tried things like disabling your add-ons and/or creating new profile.

If you use Bleachbit you could try running it to clean things up in Firefox; the normal proviso applies of being careful which options you enable as it can remove things you may want to keep, i.e. cookies, passwords, URL history etc.

Yup, I noticed that. I thought it was just me...
At first, when I waited half a second and didn't see a menu, I thought maybe I 'miss-clicked',
so I clicked again. Then I got to see the menu blink on and off again :(
So then I started to w.a.i.t... for the menu. Like you said...

I always run Firefox with zero disk cache, limit history to only
URL's visited, and as a last resort run private browsing
as default.

Add-on called cache-status is nice for the ram cache, and
I haven't isolated a big slowdown to any one add-on so far.

Thanks for the replies.

It seems to have been sorted simply by returning to a plain theme with no "persona"
For this insight I offer thanks to menotu and his posting in Software Discussion

'theme'?

'persona'?

I just went through every layer of firefox settings I could find,
and could not find any mention of such things.
I am quite sure I never set up such a thing, but I get the slow menus
as you described.

How exactly did you fix it?

After (partially) reading the post by menotu "Firefox 18 stuff" in "Software Discussion" it seemed to confirm a feeling I had that it was to do with just Firefox 18 and likely it was the "persona" which is a background theme that can be added to Firefox.

Here is the web page for your info  http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/

I went back to the default Firefox theme to see what happened and the problem appeared to stop.  After a period of testing I chose another standard theme, no persona, and still no problem.

Prior to that I did the clear the cache thing as suggested but it made no difference to the slowness.

I hope this helps

I am happy for you, that the problem went away. :)

But until now, I never heard of personas, and never changed themes (I don't
even know how) so I am of course on what you call the default Firefox theme.

Thanks anyway,
Shimon

It doesn't help things since Mozilla started using the Persona name as An Identity System for the Web

I don't use any persona-themes thus  I don't how good/useful the following add-on is......

Toggle Persona 1.0.9 -  Enable/Disable Personas for all themes with one click

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/toggle-persona/?src=search

Please note - this add-on has been preliminarily reviewed by Mozilla

What does it mean if an add-on is "experimental" or "preliminarily reviewed"?

Experimental add-ons have been checked by our editors to make sure they don't have security problems, but they may still have bugs or not work properly. Use caution when installing experimental add-ons and uninstall the add-on immediately if you notice problems

It's just recently that I've seen posts about the "personas"
slowing Firefox down.   Before mine have worked OK but
the default theme is better right now.

Reason:  the personas have to be big to show up right on
bigger monitors and for some reason putting that into RAM
on a smaller laptop is log-jamming the whole operation.
Some personas are nice and maybe they will free that up
in future releases.

I will point out again, that I have seen the firefox-slowdown phenomenon
reported by the OP, on a desktop pc with 4GB and no personas or special themes.
Just plain vanilla firefox. (Thankfully, it isn't a constant problem)
