<solved> synaptic d/l speed?
« on: January 21, 2013, 07:49:40 PM »
I have installed both pclos lxde and kde successfully. When I connect to synaptic to update I can't seem to download more than 65 Kb/s (not much more than dial-up) I can download a 2G torrent file in less than 20 min. (using cable high-speed internet) but it takes more than 2 hrs 30 min to download the update files for a kde install. Does anyone have a suggestion for faster downloads?

P4   2G ram  60G hd (for a clean install)  Comcast Internet

as we speak..... on another computer...... downloading file 131 of 291 (from synaptic) with 1 hr 41 min remaining at a speed of 64.4 kb/s

the pc or the connection has not much effect on this file transaction

the download speed depends on the server you are connected to download the updates and the connection speed limit, in your case is probably over 4mbps

which one is it?, check that in the synaptic settings/repositories

you only need one for megagames and one for normal updates

some servers can give you up to 500kilobytes per second but others will give 100 or 200, maybe less

Thanks for the reply..... I can't check the other computer for the exact repository, but I followed the instructions posted in the forum to delete all but one of the repositories ( libi... I can't remember) and started the download.  Right now, I have 199 of 291 left to download (for a kde install) at a rate of 51 kb/s  and 1 hr 52 min to go. I had the some speed problem when I tried to update my lxde install. Am I doing something wrong??

Hi Larry,
What repo are you using? You should be able to see the server name in the download window. Otherwise you can cancel your download, check your server name & restart. Synaptic will resume where you left off.

For me, in a somewhat remote spot, http://ftp.heanet.ie give regular top speeds even though it is located continents away from me.

Oh, there's no need to delete the synaptic repo's from the list--just select the one you want. If I understand your post right, you deleted them.

I suggest you try a few repos to compare d/l speeds. Sometimes local servers are slower than remote ones.

Try these for starters.
http://ftp.heanet.ie
http://ftp.nluug.nl

While you are playing to find a good repo you can set synaptic to keep your downloaded files til you are finished with them by opening;
Settings-Preferences-Files & select Leave all downloaded packages in the cache

Then reset later to remove them.
Hope that helps.

i never said delete, did i?

you need to mark one for megagames and one for normal updates, the others won't be used if marked, you could need them later so delete them is a bad idea

the internet connection, how fast is it?

while not in use by anything(no laptop, desktop, smartphone or another device downloading things), you can use www.speedtest.net to make a quick test and know how fast is your connection

what repo did you selected?  the idea is select one on your own continent so if you live in southamerica, choose a server in japan is probably bad, if you are in europe, choose one there or in northamerica

Sorry for the confusion... I merely un-ticked the pre-selected repositories and slelected the one at the bottom of the list ¨libi....." that was mentioned in the forums, I didn´t actually delete anything.  After the download finished and installed, the repo I selected was removed (by the upgrade) and the first 2 repos in the list were ticked. They both begin with ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os.....  As far as d/l speed, (according to speedtest.net) Comcast cable is providing 7.54 mbps. I am located on the US west coast and do not know which repostiory to select. Thanks for all the help!

Those repos are they one you should be using. (nluug.nl)   Recently they were some changes being made that involved the repositories. Some are changing, some are being added. What was the norm isn't any longer. A post was made about for the current time using the megagame repo and the regular repo from nluug only.  When you updated the sources.list file was changed. That is why you saw the change you did.

Thanks all!  Since it appears I'm using the right repos, I will assume it was just a traffic issue causing the slow download and mark the thread <solved>

Thanks again
