What does it mean? and how can I fix it?

Thanks!

Hi Amit_277,
Since you are going to be using PCLinuxOS regularly, please bookmark this link

It is for PCLinuxOS General News and Announcements.
Before hitting UPDATE, it is recommended to look there first.
Please watch the details of update before committing and check if it wants to remove any important looking packages. If it does, cancel it and report here.
If there are any missing packages and you are asked if you still want to update, please refuse by CANCELing the update. Wait / report the issue here.

Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(

Hi agmg and sling-shot!

thanks it helped, but I got these errors while ending the process(of reload and download and istalling updates):

http://postimage.org/image/qefvmv3gn/

http://postimage.org/image/4yxeb9ohz/

I don't know if it matters but stages  2-4 in method 3 of agmg link didn't work. i just opened the folder where i needed to overwrite the sources.list file and synaptic worked (allmost hehe :)).

Sling - I'm sorry but I'm really not familiar with the content of the section of the forum you gave me. Just by what you have said about updates I can tell you I don't really understand it: what should I look for there? which details should I look for before updating? what difference does it make? doesn't synaptic should automatically update all the updates I need just by reloading and Applying?

sorry for all the questions and thank you :)

Is it just an update or are you trying to install new packages?
If yes, which ones?

I would suggest opening Synaptic, finding pclinuxos-release and re-installing it. If you get an error again post the "extra output" contents as that will show the specific error. This package simply updates the files identifying pclos 2012 to 2013, and is largely cosmetic, but could cause the odd problem if it's not right.

Usually Synaptic will work exactly as you understand, but the system is very complicated and mistakes do occur, and it's not possible to test every combination of what could be installed on an individual computer in every part of the world before releasing an upgrade, so unexpected results can also happen. There is a chain of dependencies between many packages which means sometimes upgrading a package will require another to be removed. That can have unexpected consequences if it's something a lot of other packages rely on and you haven't got a suitable alternative installed.

If Synaptic wants to remove a package you use regularly, stop and search the forum and ask questions if no one else has the problem. Similarly if it wants to remove huge numbers of packages (more than a couple) and there aren't similarly-named packages being installed to replace them, there could be a problem.

If we trusted everything to work properly every single time someone would have automated the process so you never needed to see it. The reason we still do this manually is because we don't trust the automatic system to be quite as reliable as we'd wish.

Amit_227,
Please try these:
1. Open Konsole . (It is a program available in the PC Menu). It is a terminal emulator. It will allow you to type text based commands and shows more detailed error reports than GUIs generally do.
2. Inside Konsole, type su and hit ENTER. You will be asked to enter the administrator / root password. After you enter that password and hit ENTER, the color of prompt will turn into red indicating that you are now the administrator/root user.
3. Type synaptic into Konsole and hit ENTER. This will post some messages in Konsole and open a Synaptic window. Do your usual Reload, Mark All Updates, Apply routine and check. If everything goes well, GOOD :) If not, check back with Konsole and see what is shown there. You can copy whatever happens inside Konsole and post it here.
4. Alternatively you can also type the following and check inside Konsole after becoming root:
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

Packaging well will cure headaches of many :) But learning to package will cause headaches in many :(

Sling and kjpetrie - first of all thank you very much!

kjpetrie - is pclinuxos-release is a package or the whole system?

Sling, I did what you told me and this output came out (think it is all o.k!):

That looks like an updated system to me.
Wait for kjpetrie or someone more knowledgeable than me to confirm.
In the meanwhile, it would not hurt to try the Synaptic again and check if it still throws error.

pclinuxos-release is a package in Synaptic. I suggest mark it for re-install and apply and see whether you get an error or it just works. If it just works, all should be well. If you get an error you should also see some extra output in the progress dialogue box when it finishes. That will tell you (and us) what went wrong when the package tried to install, so please post it here.

I did what kjpetrie said and I got this (4 pics of how I did the reinstall and then an output I got):

http://postimage.org/image/fgt058i8h/

http://postimage.org/image/xdag2q4tx/

http://postimage.org/image/i2lylfsgb/

*I did the konsole commands before opening synaptic and I did the 2 commands also before opening synaptic. the output of the console was from the start, nothing new appeared after using synaptic.

Thanks!

Seems to me that your system is updated for now.
Don't forget to check back for updates in a few days and never let more than 2 weeks pass without updating.

Looks as if all is well now.

I think you can modify your first post and add <SOLVED> to the subject.
