Hi all, I want to know how to start using PCLinux on my lap

Hello ya'll

My name is Amit, and several days ago I decided to start using Linux instead of Windows.
I tried to download and burn another distro - but my lap didn't fit it and not because of hardware limitatIions but because its a Toshiba Qosmio X500 lap.
When I gave up another distro I decided to give PCLinux a shot and installed it along side with windows. I successfully Installed it and now I want to start "building up" my Linux. First of all I want to make sure everything is identified and would work on may lap (and as far as I saw, all of hardware components were identified in the root user). After that I wish to make my lap a bit more protected, and then make Battelfield 3 work in PCLinux.
I'll be glad to hear if you think I should do things in other order and or even totally different if I forgot something.

A warm welcome to you, from New Zealand.

You will find the learning that goes with using any version of Linux is good. I don't know the game that you refer to - Battlefield 3 but you might find that, if it is a Windows game, there may be some difficulty in getting it to run with Linux. The more you experiment with your new found OS, then more enjoyment you will get from it.

Get to know how the system works and then, start looking through the repositories under Synaptic for games that you can use and, more importantly, will work. You might find something in there that you will enjoy almost as much as Battlefield 3.

Every issue has a lot of good articles, tutorials and guides that I'm sure you will find more than interesting.

About protection... you must know that Linux is already a much more secure operating system than Windows.
You don't need antivirus, anti-spyware and anti-malware software in Linux. Coming to Linux you are already protected
Maybe you could set up a firewall if you really need one.

Regarding Battlefield 3 on PCLinuxOS...
You must know that Windows games are written for Windows. There is WINE, of course (www.winehq.org) but getting games to work with it can at time become very frustrating. You can check it out and install it from Synaptic Package Manager, if you want. Since you have a dual boot with Windows, I suggest you continue using it to play your games and use Linux for everything else.

And two bits of advice: if you have a question/issue/problem in the future, you should consider creating a thread for each. Other members of the forum can help you better this way. Also, remember to read the rules of the forum and use the search function whenever possible.

Oh, and Sandbox is a great place to waste your time

I did searched in the search engine something to help me or articles - but for vain. I'll be glad to be directed to somewhere I can read articles of what Linux is and how to use it.
