[ solved ] DVD-RW but perhaps done CD+RW
« on: January 20, 2013, 08:41:30 PM »
I was going to us a DVD-RW to burn a "home made" iso, the only one I can lay my hands on.

Seems to read in K3B but when I try to reformat I get message  "no media installed", this has got me curious.

Many months ago I think I may have made a live CD but used +RW  option somehow. This is from a note I have written on the box. Now I don remember what I was doing.

My thinking was to force reformat but since it will not accept the DVD for this purpose Perhaps I need some command line hammering  ???

Code: [Select]
[root@localhost gert]# mount /dev/sr0 /here
mount: no medium found on /dev/sr0
[root@localhost gert]#

but opening K3b it shows there is a  /home and /root (which also has a /home inside)

Suggestions as how to proceed with figuring this out?

i haven't used rewritable media in years, can't remember if +rw or if -rw is the one that can't be reformated and has to be simply added the new files in it

about home and root, i am not sure why you mention those places

have you tried with another tools like brasero to write the iso into the disc?

By the way I am running a fully updated KDE32 installed only an hour or two ago from a liveHDD. The system I am running in all respects seem to be working fine.  I also remember that I have tested this disk on other installs so I believe it is a problem with the disk. (I know I should just get another one but that does not satisfy my curiosity)

Edit:

My information and approach seemed to go completely off the rails, so I have removed the text.

At the moment I am doing a forced full format when I discovered that dvd+rw-tools where installed, I had probably forgotten about them.
I did a quick format that was not promising as I could not mount after it was completed.

Quote
[root@localhost gert]# dvd+rw-format -force=full /dev/sr0

Waiting on the result, it is slow.

Wedgetail,

Just for you to consider before getting in too deep:

Always check the simplest things (and/or cheapest) first.

Have you burned to this brand AND type of disk before (eg., same brand but different type, say... Single Layer vs. Double Layer)? Your burner, for instance, will burn DVD-RW/+RW, but not in double layer.
Have you cleaned the drive lately? Burners are notorious for problems burning DVD's if the drive is the least bit dirty.
Are you using a new kernel? A drive that functions perfectly under a previous kernel, may have certain issues under the newer kernel.
Have you tried a less sophisticated burning program than K3b? Sometimes K3b is just too smart for its own good.
Have you tried to burn another disk from the same batch to see if you get a different result? Sometimes an unused disk is defective to begin with.
Is your current istallation free of glitches/corruptions? Certain flaws may only appear in very specific situations.

If none of these approaches solves the issue, then its time to consider the possibility that the drive is in the early stages of failure, where most of the functions/media work, but certain function/media no longer do. This is especially true for older drives (2+ years).

May all of your troubles be easily solved,

Great list, thanks, good to have it here for others to stumble across sometime in the future. Whilst I have recently had apparent error, this turned out to be something that could be ignored, this leaves me with a very good run on k3b so I am inclined to hang in there with it.

This particular DVD-RW has been used a number of times, this is why I did not put it in the rubbish bin but left it to another day when I might get time.  Well the requirement presented itself and not able to lay my hand on another one I embarked on investigation.

The dvd+rw-format -force=full /dev/sr0 options run finished successfully. I had some trouble figuring out if it was ok using the command line but it did show up in k3b as empty medium. I have now burned my DVD.  It was an experimental KDE32-2012.12 slightly modified to guarantee installs from it on my system will work every time.  Apparently because I run too many partitions I triggered a limit which shut down GRUB installation. The limit has been lifted and now I have no longer any problems so far, still testing but it is going well.

In conclusion, this little topic is solved, the force mounting did work, a bit to my surprise. I will mark the topic as solved as well.

Did you try just burning the DVD-RW without any preparation, regardless there being previous data there?

It has been quite some time since I used one, but thought they do NOT need to be formatted before rewriting ......  whereas DVD+RW do ......   or am I misremembering? ......

It is one of those situations where I burned a livecd ISO to the RW disk, done it so many times that my brain of course was somewhere else, an ISO you click and go :D nothing simpler.  I just remember that I got a real uncomfortable feeling when the disk was finished because I think it was using a DVD+R option, why on earth I did that I don't remember, but I had made a note in the case about the format.

I tried immediately to read it but no go. I thought oh well no big deal I just repeat the burn as I have done before when something did not work on a burn session. As you suggest I have often just written on top of existing content to save time.  This has brought me in trouble on a number of occasions but so far I had been able to do a full erase and I would be in business again. On these occasions I don't recall having any mounting trouble either.

This time was different, K3b in linux could not see it,  and Nero in Windows balked at it and I think I tried others but in the end it was easier just take a 25 cent DVD-R and put it aside.  Since the DVD-RW was supposed to be quite good quality I hung on to the disk. I wanted to use it on the testing of the modified ISO's so that motivated me to look closer.

After a bit of searching I did get my head around dvd+rw-tools and realised there was a -force option. I was certainly not confident that it would work since I had been unable to mount the DVD via command line.  Pleasant surprise it worked the treat.   ;D
