Author Topic: SOLVED -Problem with System Services (Read 236 times)

In trying to get a faster boot I opened "Manage System Services' and, without being quite sure of what I was doing, stopped a few things that I thought were unnecessary.

These included ATD, XFS, NSCD, PORTRESERVE, SSHD AND VB stuff. I sure got a faster boot but, when I opened Firefox 18, I found it had gone back to Firefox 17. The same with Thunderbird which had reverted from 17.0.2 to 17.0.1. (Bad move.

)

Nothing very serious though - some of my bookmarks in FF and a few emails in TB had gone.

I replaced all the stuff I had stopped but was srill stuck with the earlier versions of FF and TB.

This is a bit trivial but left me wondering which system services I don't need . I have three machines but no LAN and no peripherals at all so there must be some stuff I don't need? Cups for instance....

I am not sure why your system would revert to using an older version of Firefox or Thunderbird because you shut of some services. Something there just doesn't right about that. As far as system services that are required, Texstar made a post about this very thing some time ago. I don't have that information on hand, but perhaps a search would turn it up for you.

Thanks YouCanToo. I've done a search and turned up a few pages on this but, so far, not Texstar's.

That does not make sense to me

If only one version is installed how could a different version of that application be launched?

Do you have only one install on that PC or maybe two?

Only one. But I'm wondering about that now as a similar thing has happened before but I forget the circumstances - but I was not messing with the startup services then. Just happened - I open FF or TB and get an old one.

Another odd thing - just a few minutes ago I went to the menu to open Libre Office and it's just disappeared.

Curioser and curiouser.....

After noticing Lomanager and all my games have gone I've finally figured it out.

I just checked Gparted and find that I do in fact have two Pclos installations -- Minime and Pclinuxos full version. They are each on different partitions. So, somehow, I've been dumped in the Minime version.

But how did that happen and how do I get back into the full version?

Fixed. I changed the boot order in PCC and GParted and all is now as it was.
