I still am not sure why my usr/share/alsa/ does not contain a alsa.conf file as shown in the example provided by Just17.

Did you run  alsaconf  (as root) since you did the re/installation of alsa packages?

After such a long thread it would be useful to summarise the present situation including ....

is PA installed
is PA enabled in PCC
if PA is enabled what is showing on the Config tab of PA Vol Ctrl .....  and in the drop down box for the device/s

under what situations do you have sound and not have sound

anything else we have touched on during the thread.

I dunno about others, but I can get rather mixed up/lost because I am only visiting this thread occasionally  ;)

Yes,I have done so twice after both re installs. It does not find any pnp or pci sound cards but does seem to be doing it's thing
after the legacy/isa search.

I did a typo about the missing file in usr/share/alsa/ it should be alsa-utils that is missing.alsa.conf is present.

I will try to do so.I too can get lost or forget things as I can only work on it a piece at a time. ;)

Starting with no sound at all and a messed up kernel I tried a different kernel and regained some missing elements with regard to alsa/sound.
Reinstalling alsa and related packages as well as downloading and installing a realtek driver from realteks website did not fix the problem but was the second step forward.
With help from agmg and just17(and input from others, thanks) I have been poking around in the sound configuration but not getting far.
Or so it seemed for a time.I only had sound for notifications.
Just17 had given me an answer which at the time I did not realize. The .asoundrc file.
Two versions were offered from another thread. One with PA and one without PA.I first chose the one WITH as I had PA enabled.
Only after I switched to the second one, without PA,did I get sound in a browser(youtube video for example).

I have pulse audio installed and enabled throughout the process except for a brief time when I disabled it to see if anything changed.
I do not have PAvucontrol installed. I will do so if that is what you were asking about.
I currently have sound for notifications and in a browser but not with other apps(music players).
.
update:   after installing pavucontrol and trying to use it I get a connection refused error.Same thing I get when trying to play a song with clementine.

PA is installed and enabled, BUT it is not functioning.

My suggestion now is to rename the .asoundrc with the non-PA entries, reboot (maybe log out and in would do), and check if PA is functioning by launching PA Vol Ctrl again.

If PA is still not functioning, there are a couple of things to try to get it working properly ....

1. http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,108896.0.html  ..... an .asoundrc file for PA

test, and if PA still not working

2. http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,105480.msg922606.html#msg922606   ....  try the change with rpm.new in this post

PA is very helpful in setting default devices and choosing route for sound streams, through the GUI of PA Vol Ctrl.
It is worth the time and effort, IMO, to get it functioning properly, even if you eventually do not use it very much.

Are you saying to rename the file so it is not being utilized? In order to keep it intact but take it out of the picture?

Yes. ......  to maybe something like    PA.asoundrc  so you will recognise it.

Here is the output from the pactl stat command and the pulseaudio --use-pid-file=false:

[root@localhost /]# pactl stat

I redid the .asoundrc file but did not seem to help.
Number two however did prove to be apiece of the puzzle. With regards to the two files you mentioned, /etc/pulse/default.pa and
/etc/sysconfig/pulseaudio, the first was blank and the second was
ok.using the content of the rpm.new version I pasted it to the default.pa file and rebooted.
Still no sound other than notifications and browser and no pavolume control.
I went back to synaptic to search for something missing in pulse audio and found these:

Installed the following packages:
paman (0.9.4-1pclos2011)
plasma-applet-veromix (0.18.3-3pclos2012)
pulseaudio-module-x11 (3.0-1pclos2013)
pulseaudio-module-zeroconf (3.0-1pclos2013)
task-pulseaudio (2012.2.0-3pclos2013)

Now I have a working pulse audio!
I still have no sound from the two music players, clementine and amorak. They do not give me error messages when the play button is pressed
however as they did previosley.amorak "plays" silently and clementine throws up a notifier saying it is stopped as soon as it starts playing a file.

Play an audio file in Amarok .......  or set a whole list of files to play, so you have time to try to correct the situation.

Open PA Vol Ctrl

On the Config Tab, and the entry for your on board device, again from the drop-down list, select the most appropriate type of output to use.
Your feedback indicates you are using 5.1 audio
Quote
Default Sink: alsa_output.pci-0000_00_05.0.analog-surround-51

I would change that to "Analogue Stereo Output".

***

On the Playback tab there will be an entry for Amarok.

That will have both a Volume control and a Drop Down box for device selection (if you have more than one audio output device in the system)

With Volume set to ~50%, try selecting a device from the drop-down device list.

If all is working then you should hear sound and see the volume level vary with the playing audio file.

task-pulseaudio (2012.2.0-3pclos2013)

Obviously you did not have PulseAudio correctly installed; no wonder it was difficult to make any sense of it.

There is one more possibility ..... both Amarok & Clementine are based off the same code as I understand it.
Try another player ....  Kplayer, Kmplayer, Smplayer, VLC or other to see if the lack of sound is limited only to the two you named.
If it is then it will likely be some setting in the players you listed that is the cause.

At this point in time you appear to have a fully functioning sound system, and maybe a couple of problems with settings on two applications.
When you have tried the above, the situation will become clearer.
...  are the problems limited to those two apps?
does Amarok work when changing settings in PA Vol Ctrl?
Can you find a setting in Clementine that allows it to play?
etc

Just17,
I think we have solved this with the exception of the two music players.I had forgotten That vlc  was in there(under video) and when
I tried it it worked just fine.
Amorak just crashes after a short time and clementine is not working either.I opted to uninstall them and install a selection of music players
to try out. It's called choice right?
In any case I only had one glitch when I lost sound from the browser.I remembered the .asoundrc file and it was a copy of the NON PA version
you had posted.I changed it to the PA enabled version and sound returned.
I even had sound from two sources at once,Amazon video streaming and vlc.

I had success with banshee and aqualung players but bangarang crashed immediatly after starting palyback.
Same error as amorak.segmentation fault.
In any case I rarely use a media player and at this point I have three that work.Sound from a browser is more important and that seems to be accomplished.
thanks to all who responded and helped with this problem whether you only put in your two cents or two dollars!

Did you try those problem players with a variety of file types?
Did you try them from a different (new) test account? - don't forget the ~/.asoundrc  is needed per user account.

Glad to note you have a system with sound working sufficiently for you.

I would be concerned about the segmentation faults from the other apps .....

I installed Amarok here after noticing it is updated recently and got the following report from Synaptic ......

Quote
While installing package amarok-2.7.0-1pclos2013:

Amarok no longer works with the phonon-xine backend!
You must enable the phonon-gstreamer backend in
Configure your Desktop - Multimedia - Phonon - Backend
or Amarok will fail to generate ouput and crash

It might be applicable to your situation.

Thanks,
I did reinstall amorak and saw the note.Tried Gstreamer and it worked fine.I guess it just goes to show that re installing should be tried
in these situations. That is great as I really prefer amorak . I use it on my other machine with pclinuxos at work.
That one has no sound problems but has developed a wifi problem.Thats another thread for another time though.
I am going to dig into a post in the networking section I found today by coffeetime and start there.
Thanks again!
