FeeCAD
« on: January 16, 2013, 04:22:54 AM »
I come across this software but its only available in deb package based for Linux it seems.

Is it possible to to do a deb based installation with PCL2012?

alien is the program you need, but...................
You are on your own.
Some programs make changes on the wrong places.
Some programs need alien libs.
You could destroy your installed system.

Quote
Install Debian and Slackware Packages with RPM
Alien is a program that converts between the rpm (Mandriva, Redhat ),
dpkg (Debian), slp (Stampede), and tgz (Slackware) file formats.
If you want to use a package from another distribution than the one
you have installed on your system, you can use alien to convert
it to your preferred package format and install it.

Before going this route, you might look at HeeksCAD or QCAD, both of which are in the repositories.  Just sayin'... might save you some trouble?

Try Draftsight, a free CAD package from Solidworks.  Not in the repos so at your own risk but I've been using it for a year or so with no problems.

You may want to create a separate thread for this.  What release of PCLinuxOS are you using?  I'm using 2012.08 with the updated sources.list per this thread and see that I'm having the same problems (I just did a re-install a couple of weeks back to correct a poor partitioning scheme).  This may be a problem with the repos (Not likely) or the package (seems more likely to me).

The right place to report this is in the Packaging section of the board, starting a new topic.  Please look at this topic before posting...  (EDIT from my previous, which was in error.)

Not really that interested in installing just got curious about it because of this thread. I thought I might play with it but not serious enough about it to pursue it. I only posted in an attempt to be helpful.

Sure.  I'll take it up with the packager, then.  Thanks for the report!

I've been working on FreeCAD. It is a bear to get all of the dependencies and to build correctly. I stopped working on it for a while, but I am trying again. :)

I'm using CAD extensively on my current work ... basically AutoCAD but I bring in my laptop where I installed DraftSight. I would also like to try FreeCAD ... go, Galen, GO!

All dependencies are in place and it is building without errors to 38%, so far. It is a very big package to compile, could be a few hours. :P  ;)
