Upgrading repositories (Now solved)
« on: January 19, 2013, 11:52:46 PM »
Hi to one and all,

I am trying to up grade my repositories wanting to keep my system up to date. I added a new repository list following the instructions offered in option 3 from the posting dated 16 January 2013.

Everything seems alright, the upgrade does all the right things until an error message pops up, "APT system report: Error while running transaction" appears, dashing my hopes of an early night. Such message appears when attempting to install the required packages after reload, mark updates and apply etc. have been used.

I am sure the fault is with me and my understanding of these things. All help gratefully received. Thank you.

What repository you are currently using? Did you try other mirrors also?
Did you get the updated sources-list on the first update after changing your repositories?

I use PASS but I need the public mirrors for testing.

What I did on a recently installed system?
Picked up a mirror from this thread and add it to the default list. Then run a complete update from that mirror and received the new sources-list.

I have seen this error before when the update includes Calibre. There is usually another message window underneath that says something like errors reported during Calibre update are not critical. So check to see if you see that too.

Hi,

Thank you for your replies.

The link referred in the the second reply is the one I have been trying to use, with option 3. Everything is working until the updates listed are needed to be installed, then failure.

Trying to update using the the command line, using the correct way as per posting of 06 October 2009 from Texstar himself, I get the following error message.

E: Error while running transaction
E: Handler silently failed
-bash-4.1#

The updates are listed, preparation made for their installation, that they are installing and of course they are not and ends with the above error message.

In the meanwhile as I try to resolve things, any more ideas, please?

Thank you,

sevenjen

Open a terminal and type:

su (root password)
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

Post here the error messages from these commands.

Select only apt-sources-list to be upgraded.
When finished, close and restart Synaptic.
Reload and Mark all Upgrades.
Check if you get the same error again.

EDIT: there are some strange file sizes reported for your packages.

Please post the output of the df command from terminal.

Hi once more,

agmg, thank you for asking for the output of the df command and other pointers made. The partition was full, hence the trouble I was in.

I now have a fully updated system with which to play.

Cheers

That was my thought when asking for the output of the df command.
Glad you figured it out. :)
