Asus P8Z77-V LX Motherboard
« on: January 19, 2013, 08:19:14 PM »
Hi all.

My trusty old computer that has been running literally non stop for the last eight years has decided to die, so I find myself in the position of having to build a new one. I'm pretty rusty when it comes to the latest motherboards and I have been reading about potential boot problems with Linux and the dreaded UEFI bios that's used in modern boards. I have been looking at the Asus P8Z77-V LX board and downloaded the manual which states that UEFI can be disabled, enabling legacy boot. I am assuming in that case I should be able to boot PCLOS without any issues. I was wondering if anyone had any experience of this particular board under PCLOS and if there are any problems I need to be aware of?

This is the bundle I have been looking at: http://tinyurl.com/b5j2ttk

All comments / opinions are welcome :)

Thanks
Rich..

Sorry this product is no longer available, however what about these alternatives?

That would be my understanding too.

Strange, the link worked 3 hours ago, now I get the same result  ???

From all the info I read on UEFI, I would also conclude that if you can turn it off, it'll work just fine with Linux.

But I'd rather see some comments from those having some experience here  :)

Thanks for the replies guys, yes the link is unavailable, seems they are out of stock. The board can be obtained from elsewhere, but here's a link to the Asus website giving tech specs, though it doesn't explicitly say whether Linux will work.

Just now I googled the board and Linux as keywords and found that at least one guy has several Linux distros running on it - see here.

One more thing (or should I ask this under the software section?), the drivers for extreme4 are only for windows, would that be a problem? Is it compatible with linux?

Ahh, thanks. That's the Asrock board, but that's as good as the Asus from what I can tell, so I may go for one of those instead. :)
