rpm-installer 0.6-2pclos2013 go mad
« on: January 18, 2013, 07:13:48 AM »
Hi, people!
Your actual Google-Earth package give me a dark-black interface, very bad and usefulness.
But I have a previous version rpm-package (right for PCLinuxOS) that work good. I have installed without problem this package on my other PCLinuxOS installations using the rpm-installer for my installation (it's easy: just a click!)...
But... on my last (yesterday I have installed it) PClinuxOS 32-bit LXDE-mini installation, whwn I attempt to install my Google-Earth rpm packageusing rpm-installer, appear to me NO the "open with rpm-installer" but the "open with srpm-installer", that (obviously) don't work. All options give error.
So, I think that your rpm-installer package are, maybe, wrong (there is some error in it, in my opinion). Can you see,l please, about the problem?
I have installed the same my Google-Earth rpm-package (using LXTerminal) al all work good, but... I prefer, if possible, to have an rpm-installer PCLinuxOS package that work good...
Thank you very much, people!  :) Your work (PCLinuxOS) is a great "distro": the best "distro" for inexperienced users, in my opinion. Good work, really.

we don't recommend to use packages outside the repo

after saying that, have you tried in console to write rpm -i thenameofthepackage.rpm instead of rpm installer

Usually, I use Synaptic, of course.
But NON with google-earth package, due the actual google-earth package don't work on my PCLinuxOS 32-bit installations... I can see a dark thing that don't resemble at all the Google Earth image.
Serj (here, on this Forum) put here a link to download a previus version (a previus google-earth package for PCLinuxoS 32-bit) that work, installed in any my PCLinuxOS 32-bit installations.
So, I need to install fromout of actual Repos, in this specific case... or resign to install and use Google-Earth.
I have now uninstall the rpm-installer package... and, then, i reinstall it the second time (using Synaptic, of course)... and my "new" rpm-installer don't work.
It's appear the "SRPM-installer for building" (I have not installed any package for deal with "srpm"!) command, but NO TRACE of the right command ("Open with RPM-installer").
So, the actual rpm-installer package (very important, in my opinion, especially for not-experienced users, that allow to install a PCLinuxOS package version that work if the newest versions don't work without any Terminal use) containing some kind of error and is usefulness... (I know the command-line, but I hate very very much to use Terminal and command-line and I love a lot PCLinuxOS due his excellent -it's the PCLinuxOS historic pride- "point and click" philosophy).

Please, can you see about that (I am sure of it, but it's the same a good idea, if you see the facts with your own eyes) and give us an "rpm-installer" package really working? Thank you, very much.

Hi, people!
I'm sure that the problem is NOT into "rpm-installer" package, now.
I have downloaded a regular pachege (rpm-package) from the official repo, and attempt to install it, but fail.
Fail using "rpm-installer" and fail the same using Terminal (# rpm -ivh rpm-packagename.rpm fail because System [in LXDE desktop-environment] DON'T RECOGNIZE RPM PACKAGES  :o ).

I don't know why System don't recognize any RPM-package  ??? , but it's a real fact.
Hoping to help -a little- you about to resolve this problem...

You could also post details about your hardware, and perhaps try running the Google-Earth from the repository from the command line to see what may be failing.

Google Earth is working well here (on top of KDE with desktop effects enabled).  It would be better to fix the current version, so that updates can continue for you...

My problem about Google Earth is now solved. It was not about the PCLinuxOS LXDE 32-bit version installation, but the PCLinuxOS LXDE 64-bit version. So, I think it's not interesting for us, because the 64-bit version is (obviously) a testing release.
But, if you are interesting, that problem was born due my Kernel (the 64-bit Kernel) upgrade (from 2.6.38.8-pclos3 version to 3.2.18-pclos2.bfs version).
After that, was not possible to configure my ATI driver (the ATI Catalist Control center don't work!, so I cannot configure it: when I attempt to open the ATI Catalist Control Center it crash and give me a report about to use "anticonfig" for configure the driver.
But, "anticonfig" is wrong (the word is wrong): the right word is -obviously-  "aticonfig".
My Google Earth was not working due the lack of my ATI driver configuration.
After the configuration (using "# aticonfig --initial -f and rebooting after that), that happens during reboot, my Google Earth turn working (and working good).
S
This is about Google earth (on my 64-bit instalaltion; on my 32-bit installation the actual Google Earth package -from official PCLinuxOS repos- don't work: I can see only a horrible dark window and not the Google Earth standard interface, but... a previous version (that I have downloaded from your Forum) work good, so I can install and use it instead the new (no useful) version.
To install, I usually use the rpm-installer package. That works very good until the actual version was released (the previous version was the 0.6-1pclos2012, by Neal I think; the actual version is the 0-.6-2pclos2013... and this version don't works at all on PCLinuxOS LXDE).
I have seen that the new version works good on PCLinuxOS XFCE, of course.
But, on PCLinuxOS LXDE version, the command (on mouse right-click) "open with RPM-installer" disappear, it's vanished!
So, I attempt to install (into my PCLinuxoS LXDE 32-bit) my Google Earth 32-bit rpm-package (that I downloaded thanks to Serj) using the Terminal, but... I had to discover that the .rpm extension is unrecognized by System and all my attempt to install using Terminal fails.
At last, I proceed to uninstall the latest version of rpm-installer and reboot.
At reboot, I was able to install my Google Earth rpm-package using Terminal... and my System recognize the RPM extension without problem.

To have more experience, I proceed to reinstall (using Synaptic) the "rpm-installer" package... and all the problems comes back suddenly! RPM-installer was not working and it was not more possible to install using Terminal.
After that, I proceed to uninstall the "rpm-installer" package a second time, reboot and all turn to work good.

About my hardware: I am using PCLinuxOS on 4 my PCs. Some is PCLinuxOS LXDE and some is PCLinuxOS XFCE (I don't like at all the KDE4 desktop-environment, so -till 2009 Spring- I have non more KDE4 installation on my PCs).
I have 2 DesktopPC (both are 32-bit Intel Processor), a Netbook (a 32-bit Intel Processor too) and a Notebook (an AMD 64-bit Processor). My Graphics is by Intel (on DesktopPCs anc on Netbook) and an ATI HD (on the 64-bit Notebook).
The problem about the new "rpm-installer" package appears everywhere on my PCLinuxOS LXDE installations, identical (even for the 32-bit and the 64-bit installations).
On my PCLinuxOS XFCE installation, the new "rpm-installer" work good and give no problem.
So, I think that the package is not "broken", but -I suspect- there is some conflict or some other problem that hurt the new "rpm-installer" package and LXDE (as it is on PCLinuxOS actually).
This is all, I

Google-Earth on 64bit is one huge PITA, I'm not sure if I will get this working properly but will try again soon after some other tasks on 64bit have been addressed.

Thank you, Pinoc!  :)
On my PCLinuxOS 64-bit LXDE (it was installed using the 64-bit LXDE-mini version), now, the package Google-Earth works good (it is the actual 64-bit package: google-earth 6.2.1.6014-2pclos2012), but you are right: Google Earth is a bit more worse at every new version update...
For instance, the last PCLinuxOS package for PCLinuxOS 32-bit don't works on any of all my PCLinuxOS 32-bit installations (I have 5 different PCLinuxOS 32-bit installations on 3 PCs and one PCLinuxOS 64-bit installation on other PC). I can use Google Earth on my PClinuxOS 32-bit installation thanks Serj, who put a link to an old Google-Earth rpm (build for PClinuxOS: it's simply an older version from Repo, I think) that I downloaded... Installing it, all works good.

There is a way to have the older version of the "rpm-installer" package, please? (for 32-bit version and 64-bit version)
Because the rpm-installer 0.6-1pclos2012 works very good on PCLinuxOS LXDE, meanwhile the 0.6-2pclos2013 version (the actual version) works good on PClinuxOS XFCE, but works very very bad (giving problems a lot) on PCLinuxOS LXDE.
There is some way to have it, in your knowledge?

Thank you very much for your great work in PCLinuxOS, Pinoc.  :)

Daniel

EDIT:
post the output from
Code: [Select]
cat ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list | grep rpm-installer

No output at all. Non as User:

[myuser@localhost ~] $ cat ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list | grep rpm-installer
[myuser@localhost ~] $

Neither as root:

[root@localhost myuser] # cat ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list | grep rpm-installer
[root@localhost myuser] #

And if I try to install (using Terminal) a RPM package (fresh downloaded from official PCLinuxOS Mirror), the output is that it aren't a RPM-package.
If I uninstall the rpm-installer 0.6-2pclos2013 package and reboot, after I can install the RPM package using Terminal.

ADDENDA: On my PCLinuxOS XFCE installations the ouput is the same: identical. But... in that XFCE PCLinuxOS installation, the rpm-installer package work good and give no-error (it is possible to install RPM and the System see all rpm-package as RPM). Different story on LXDE pCLinuxoS: the rpm-installer package don't work at all and the System (if that package is installed) don't recognize RPM-package as RPM (seem it recognize as SRPMs, but I am not sure of this).
