Synaptic Repository for LXDE (SOLVED)
« on: January 17, 2013, 04:23:27 PM »
Apologies if something similar has already been posted. I've read the info on the home page regarding repositories. I'm still a newbie. Can't work out how to get to this point:
as root copy the file sources.list from step 1 to /etc/apt/sources.list
Can somebody please give me 'idiot's guide' step by step instructions?
I haven't up-dated my system for a couple of weeks.
Thanks in advance for your help

Close Synaptic
Open your file manager as root/systemmanager
(fi from terminal gksu pcmanfm or from the menu)
navigate to
/etc/apt/
open sources.list with your favorite text editor (copy/backup sources.list before to play safe)
delete everything in sources.list
copy the sources list from the forum page in your webbrowser and paste into the sources list.
save and you are done.

P.S.
This is automaticly done if you select ibiblio as (only) repo and update.

There are a couple of ways to do this, but probably the simplest is to use the GUIs:

1. Get two copies of the file manager window up,

2. a.  move one to the directory where the new copy of sources.list is (if it's not already there),
   b.  move the other to /etc/apt/  (go up to the root directory to find etc.)

3. you won't be able to do anything in b, as a user so click on Tools at the top of the window and select "open current folder as root".  Once you've given the root password you can manipulate files in the folder - but be careful you can do harm here!

4. Then find sources.list in this folder and rename it e.g. sources.list.old (just in case).

5. After that you should be able to drag the new sources.list file into this b window from window a.

6. That's it!

If you are familiar with Linux/UNIX commands you can do this from the command line in a terminal (as root).

I've just seen DeBaas's method  I was assuming you'd already got the sources.list in a text file, if not follow what he says.

How does one become a hero?  By asking a lot of dumb questions apparently! I have three computers of various ages, the most powerful is a Dell Netbook 10v; each has 2 or 3 versions of PCLOS of various vintages.  Location, St John's, Newfoundland.

If you haven't checked this yet, the new ibiblio repository may show up in Synaptic...settings...repositories.  If it is, just un-check the old ones, check the ibiblio one and then run the 'reload' and 'mark updates' and 'apply'.  This method would require nothing that you don't already know how to do.  After the updates have been applied, you'll find the ibiblio one is gone and some new ones are in the 'list' and checked.

Yonnie.
Thanks, I followed your instructions. Problem solved. I'll mark this thread 'SOLVED'.
