puppy and antix are worth a try.

More memory if you can find it and if it will fit.

If extra memory can't be added (or acquired), can you install a small, extra HDD?

Swap causing massive slow downs is more likely due to "thrashing".  The swap partition is competing with the root partition (and, possibly the home partition) all on the same device.  If you can put the swap partition on a small, dedicated, physically separate drive, then it could be accessed in parallel with the other (OS and/or data) drives without competition.  Will swap still slow down the system?  Yes, but not nearly as much as programs terminating unceremoniously due to RAM limits...

frazelle09  if you managed to install Wine (and I hope you did  ;D  )  check this two word processors they are light and doesn't install so you can put them in home and make a direct access to them.

AEdit – Portable Word Processor  is more like notepad but better  http://www.pendriveapps.com/aedit-word-processor/

TomahawkGold is more robust but is good too http://es.download.cnet.com/TomahawkGold/3000-2079_4-10501771.html

There is a light version of Tomahawk  http://www.pendriveapps.com/tomahawk-pdf/
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

I have a P4 machine running LXDE. I read where it uses only 115mb of ram. The remaining 141 mb should be enough to run some programs. Find out the maximum memory capacity  for the machine then go online to buy extra memory. there is a web-site that sells "ancient memory".  I'll pm you to give you the web address.

We finally got the compu to him last Wednesday.  Since it's older equipment, i had a hard time with the keyboard - doh - until i switched it with the mouse's input.  i can't believe that they fit into each others port.

By then we figured the mouse was kaput but he chirped up and said he had a couple of left-over ones that he thought didn't work from previous hand-me-downs.  i told  him i'd take one of them home and try it out.  By that time it was time to go to our church group's Ayyam-i-Há service project for the day, a visit to one of the retired folks home.

Today is Sat. and the Fast starts.  We had a party here at the house last night and he and his mom stayed over.  He wanted to continue programming last night after the party but it was 12 A.M. and i was shot so i had to tell him that we'd continue in the morning.

We'll see how it goes.  He and his mom have open house for prayers in the P.M. every Wednesday now, so i'm planning on going and getting there early to see how the machine is coming and to also give him some tips on the O.S.  Maybe we can learn how to install a different boot screen - he really liked (i knew he would) the Steam Punk one.  It's really an eye-catcher!

Dat's enough.  Gotta go back to bed.  Have a great morning!  :)
