I bought an Guitar today
« on: January 16, 2013, 07:18:40 AM »
It's not everyday I do such a thing. In fact I've bought my Son three guitars over the last five years, but I just felt funny/odd to spend any money on myself.

My Son is 19 and he can go get a job.  ;D  He's away so I snuck into the music store today and played 'Acoustic' guitars for about two and a half hours. My beloved guitar, I've had for 37 years which is just too strange for me to comprehend. Where have the years gone ?, and the poor thing needs a rest.
It's a magical guitar, many times I've gone looking at Acoustic guitars to walk out of the store feeling those $2,000 gits aren't anywhere as good as my old one.

I was looking at something around $200 to $400. (AUD) The good ones started out around $800 +.

This project has gone on for about three months, my old Guitar was twenty years old when I bought it making it close to sixty years old, which is sort of strange as it seems it'll just keep going forever, but she needs a rest. The fretboard has deep ridges on it which just adds a nice 'buzz' to the sound. It has an incredible tone, as you can imagine I've worked on it a lot over the years.

Anyway I got a middle range Yamaha FG700S. The price on the tag was $365. There were two other guitars I was considering, but they were no good. I was confused and tired and decided to just buy some strings for my 60 year old Guitar, and continue punishing that.

The guy who runs the shop I've known for over twenty years, there's a bit of good will as I've bought quite a lot of stuff there over the years.
I said, "I'll get some strings", and pulled out my old packet from my back pocket, 'cause I specifically use a certain gauge, he said, " I'll do you $299 on the Yamaha".
Instantly I thought of all the pawn Broker shows on TV, ( :D )and said." I'll give you 280 ?".
He said falling back into his chair, "How about we say $290."
I said, "OK".

So from $365 to $290 yeah that felt good. I knew he was still making something on it. The Guitar was made of good quality wood, and setup nicely out of the box. I'll tweak it a bit; it's a pretty good guitar, without need  sending to a Luthier for a 'Setup',... but was a real funny feeling to actually buy myself something, it's been a long time is the essence of this silly little tale.  ;)
Just thought I'd share what turned out to be an interesting day  ;D

Yamaha Guitar you say ?
Of course I Googled it when I got home, this is quite a good review on Youtube, in fact all I watched were good.

I parted with my Yamaha (nylon strung, wide fretboard) last year .....  passing it on to my daughter.

I bought it in 1972 or thereabouts ....  cost a couple of months wages equivalent at the time. A lovely guitar to play.

Prior to that I had an Egmund (Egmond?) steel strung acoustic with exceptional sound quality ....  I was sorry for a long time I disposed of that.

Yes, they become great friends, and improve with age, like most wooden instruments they just wanna be played.

Probably a very good choice. Yamaha have been producing great quality musical instruments for mary years now. Enjoy.
