installation of pclos/e17 from 2 years old live-cd
« on: January 15, 2013, 03:21:57 PM »
Hi!
Lately I started to like very much e17, running bodhilinux and other distros with e17-DE, favourite one at the moment is opensuse with e17-DE.
So today I found an old cd with pclos/e17, rpms are from 10/2010, let this start on my 2nd laptop, am ibmt23, and stuff was very nice, a well looking ambient, mostly black background, based on KDE-Apps, with e17-version 0.16.999 as DE, beautiful!
So I decided to install it on a separate partition, this went well, only had to reinstall grub, no problem.
So first thing after a fresh install is allways looking for updates, "apt-get update && upgrade" said nothing to update.
I looked in synaptic and found all rpms very outdated and went to search and found on pclos-website the news about using only this repo from .nl,  so I loaded this and deactivated others.
synaptic then said, it will remove  about 300 rpms, keep back some 100 and upgrade only a few.
I accepted, knowing that eg the e17-rpms would be removed, and I did not really expect to have a running system anymore.
So it was, no more booting.
Now my questions:
- is there a way to upgrade from such old stuff? oh really, I liked this, but eg firefox was in version3.6...
- is there a way to maybe run an kde/lxde-mini and install e17 on top
- is there a possibility to get newer e17-stuff from the repo, what I've seen is from end 2011, and e17 is out with finalrelease since end of december

Thank you a lot in advance

Martin

You could try to install the LXDE mini distro and install task-enlightenment from Synaptic
http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/live-cd/PCLinuxOS-LXDE-Mini-2012.12.iso
Do not forget to correct your Synaptic repo settings and update before installing the extra packages.

yes but the way is very difficult and absolutely not recommended.

no there is currently no package maintainer for e17 in the gang
The full life is a big mess

In addition, "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" is guaranteed to break your system. The correct command is "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade".

Hey, quickiest  community around!

So I will install lxde-mini and put somehow e17 on top, maybe from e17-website e17.org

You could try task-enlightenment in the repos.  Then choose the DE you want to boot at the login screen.   ;)

I did an fresh install with LXDE-Mini, changed the repo as advised, run an update via synaptic, reloaded synaptic and installed e17 from the repo, works fine, but is 2 years old.
Is there expected an e17-actualisation in repo from your side, even without a package-maintainer?
Or could it work out to run the opensuse-rpms which are bleeding edge?

Thank you for tips

Martin

I wouldn't recommend installing rpms from another distro. That's just asking for trouble even if they do install. Distros do a lot of work to ensure their packages match and clearly they haven't designed them to work on pclos, so they'll be buggy at best.

Just for fun I will give a try

Saw too late this one

I will try this, and try to get an actual e17 on it, also for sure an actual KDE.
Anyway, e17-rpms from opensuse have no depencies to other rpms, at least what I have seen. I will try this.
If this does not work, I will try to install e17 from e17.org, but this seems to be a bit complicated for a amateur like I am, lets see, there is nothing to loose then wasted time.

I am just installing this old live-cd from 2010 again, kde with e17 on top.
It starts to rain all day now in Portugal, so I got time for this.
I will let you know

So far

Martin

Hm, looks like wasted time, even with precious help  I can not actualize it, it gives a lot of 404-error, that is about the outdated KDE/e17live-cd

Ok, tomorrow is an other day, let us play it with LXDE

Sorry for this crank, I do not want to bother you, just playing around.
