(SOLVED by new installation) VirtualBox WiFi?
« on: January 15, 2013, 01:42:07 PM »
I have VirtualBox running WinXP but cannot get internet to connect. My PCLinuxOS computer uses a WiFi card to connect to the internet.  It works great but for some reason, isn't translating over to VB.

VB has always connected to the internet in the past when I've had a direct wired internet connection.

In addition to checking the info in the menotu's post, check the following:
In VB - select your VM.
On the Machine menu select Settings.  Then select Network
Make sure Enable Network Adapter is checked.
I have Attached To:  Bridged Adapter
Name: wlan0 (or whatever your wireless adapter is called. This is important - if you have your ethernet adapter identified here it won't work)
This last one has caused me headaches when I copied my VM to a machine that was connected by wire. It took me a while to  figure out why I had no internet connection.

This works for me on both my Win7 and WinXP VMs.
PCLos KDE & LXDE user.

Thanks for this. I also checked the previous thread refered above.

I have no way of naming the Bridged Adapter.  I get eithe wlan0 or eth0.  I can't give it aunique name.  This is probably the sticking point.

In addition, windows keeps asking me to install new hardware (ethernet).  I have no idea where this driver is.  Even Windows can't find it.

Mark,  If you choose NAT -  it shouldn't matter what type of network connection the Linux host is using.
(Bridge mode could give issues if the DHCP function is restricted on your wifi router)
Have you reinstalled Guest additions after a VBox update?

THEN and THAN usage..
Use than to make a comparison. Use then when referring to time.

Guys, I think the problem is in how I moved the file from my main computer.  I went through suggestions and was getting nowhere.  Again, probbly a corrupt file.  And, the file was too bloated anyhow.  I created a new virtual machine for WinXP and did a complete new install of the OS.   I followed that up by installing Quickbooks once more.  It took a bit of time, but all is working now.

It made more sense to just start fresh than to wrestle with the older file.  Plus, i can probably move this new file a bit more easily (and properly).

I'm marking this solved.:)

Thanks again for all the input.  I'm saving this for future reference.:)
