From news.com.au

Spy agency ASIO wants to hack into Australians' personal computers and commandeer their smartphones to transmit viruses to terrorists.

The Attorney-General's Department is pushing for new powers for the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation to hijack the computers of suspected terrorists.

But privacy groups are attacking the ''police state'' plan as ''extraordinarily broad and intrusive''.

A spokesman for the Attorney-General's Department said it was proposing that ASIO be authorised to ''use a third party computer for the specific purpose of gaining access to a target computer''.

''The purpose of this power is to allow ASIO to access the computer of suspected terrorists and other security interests,'' he told News Limited.

''(It would be used) in extremely limited circumstances and only when explicitly approved by the Attorney-General through a warrant.

''Importantly, the warrant would not authorise ASIO to obtain intelligence material from the third party computer.''

The Attorney-General's Department refused to explain yesterday how third-party computers would be used, ''as this may divulge operationally sensitive information and methods used by ASIO in sensitive national security investigations.''

But cyber specialist Andrew Pam, a board member of the Electronic Frontiers lobby group, predicted ASIO could copy the tactics of criminal hackers to seize control of target computers.

Australians' personal computers might be used to send a malicious email with a virus attached, or to load ''malware'' onto a website frequently visited by the target.

''This stuff goes on already in the commercial and criminal world, and security agencies could be using the same techniques to commandeer people's computers and use them to monitor a target,'' Mr Pam said.

''Once you get control of a computer and connect to their network you can do whatever you want.''

Honestly this is wrong, and illegal. I have no confidence ASIO has the competence to hack a third party computer with the aim of targeting a criminal.
Think about it; why would you use a third party computer if you already know the target computer, just go for it. Maybe the reasoning is that an innocent third party Computer wouldn't set of any alarms to the criminals , but doesn't make a grain of sense to me personally.

The likelihood of that scenario going terribly wrong is high. The third party Comp could/would intercept via it's Resident Anti-Malware the malicious package and just quarantine it.

Sounds like a bunch of Kindergarten kids fantasising at milk and fruit time.

This stupid idea has come from a Politician, once the plan is assigned to a Computer expert they'll simply say no.
Australian Government was going to put a Filter on the Internet a few years back, which was a complete failure. Something similar to the 'Great firewall of China'.
Last thing anyone needs is for politicians who don't know anything about Computers sending dangerous Malware to anyone, even so called criminals.
ASIO is as competent as Inspector Clouseau, in the Pink Panther movies.

Aww cmon... Don't be like that guys... We should all be supporting them... How can You be against it? They used one of the magic / scare words didn't they... How can You not like the idea... They will only use this super power to fight terrorists pedophiles child molesters and those nasty pirates and other bad people... If You are a good citizen You have nothing to worry about... They would NEVER use it against a lawful citizen like You or me... Na-ah... Never... This would NOT be used against people fighting for freedom of speech or just posting their opinions on the internet... This would not be a violation of Your civil rights - they would only violate the rights of those that we should all consider public enemies... Ok ok enough of this. This is BULL! Btw a phrase "A SIO!" is what Polish children are saying when they want to get rid of something... It's something of a children version of "Go away!".... So... A SIO with that idea ASIO... We are way past the times where Your stupid mind games and scare words were enough to scare us into giving you whatever you asked us for... We are going to bed without the stories for children so keep Yours to Yourselves K? Thx. Bye.

Regards.

Andrzej

I accept that, at least Inspector Clouseau was funny.  :D

Well it doesn't seem the type of thing you'd advertise if you were gonna take that course, which morally is the wrong course, of course.
Funny, I haven't heard of ASIO for about five years, they have been keeping a very low profile since doing something terribly wrong which I just can't remember. A botched raid on an innocent family in the middle of the night type scenario. Watching too many U.S. Cop shows.
Australia generally imports U.S. forces to do the hard work anyway. The average Army are like guys out of "Dad's Army", British TV show.

Thanks for that AndrzejL, that's a wrap.
