I am trying my sisters wireless card now, a D-Link, DWA-551 I think. It is working actually, plugged it in, showed it on the network setup, or whatever; SSID's, but failed to connect.
Tried rebooting, etc, nothing. Gave up, turned off PC, next morning, it was disconnected, tried to log in, and it connected.
It was going off and on a lot, but I am guessing it's my internet provider. They suck, and this is nothing new, for them to be down, or on and off alot. It's them. It's every 30-90 seconds it can go in and out, even on my old laptop.

I did a speedtest, and got 1.2 mphs (does that sound right?), downloaded the updates for my new PC, using that new link in the front page, averaged 50-70kps, yeah, phone line speed. But later, at times, showed 200kps.
again, may be my internet provider. They're known for being bad, but if it's not them, it's a hotspot through Verizon. I love verizon, but a hotspot is not unlimited data, and it's very expensive in the long run.

anyways, if it's worth mentioning, the first wireless card, from LInPC does NOT show up anywhere. There is no "wireless option", can't set it up. Don't see it in hardware, nothing. It is as if it has no power. A green light on the card comes on, but I see nothing on the actual computer.

I gave you all a "thank you" for helping me out. wireless and me are enemies. It's another language. I am just happy something connected without any real hassle.
Too much for me. What card works? And out of the box? what drivers does one possibly need? where to get it? At least I am starting to understand extracting tar bz files.

There is a 'possibility' that the network card has been dislodged a little during transport .........  I would disconnect the PC from the mains, open it and take out the network card and then reinsert it.

.....  maybe worth a try ......

-update-

My sisters wireless card has been working for about a week or so, a day or so after my last post. I am hopefully going to be able to figure out if the card is good or bad; and if good, what will actually get this to run.
If this is too much of a headache, I may very well be getting another one.

no one's fault, but like I said, this is another language to me.

What did the seller say when you enquired about it?

Now things are making sense. I got this email:

Hi Jeremy,
Just to be clear, you got the Netis  WF2117 card, we were out of the Azio(54mbps) and the Netis(150mbps) is basically a free upgrade. This Netis uses the RT5360 chip, http://www.netis-systems.com/?wpsc-product=wf-2117-2 for more info on it. This driver was added to your system, if you reinstalled it in gone now. This is how we got it working....http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=12161447

Again if you have problems we will gladly replace the card with one that is "plug and play" for PCLinuxOS, sorry for the problems.

Eric K.
LinPC.us

I apologize for this whole mess. it does explain why I couldn't get it to load properly.
This shines a whole new light, and maybe I can get this to work now.

LinPC.us will replace the card or whatever is needed to make it good. :) Our tech says the card was working, I cannot verify this. I did use the said system before shipment, but did not test the wifi. (we now test and verify wifi connectivity in all final system test)
Our tech got it working using info on another linux forum. (googled linux rt5360)

Sorry for any inconvenience this has caused we take full responsibility for the oversight on our part.

Now that I know what card it is, I can see if it will work or not. I hope I don't need internet connection during the configuration. I am using my hotspot. I have no Ethernet modem/routers whatever they're called. It's ONLY a hotspot.
I will download whatever I can off from the other PCI wireless card that I got from my sister, then shut off the PC, place in the Netis card, and see what I can do.

thank you again guys.

No need to apologize Eric. It may have been configured and all ready to go. I have a habit of formatting the whole drive, and when I booted up to "guest" or something, I figured, yeah, I'll format it.

We'll get this working soon.

I get an error early on:

Code: [Select]
[root@localhost jeremybailey]# apt-get install linux-headers-generic build essential
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package linux-headers-generic
[root@localhost jeremybailey]#

According to the link on how this gets set up, the person says something about being hooked up to an ethernet connection. I only have a hotspot, no ethernet.

It's been a fun time with this  ::)

I don't blame anyone. I am not good with this linux wireless stuff, and I don't have a ethernet connection.

The package does not exist on PCLinuxOS.

That is why attempting to exactly follow instructions from another distro is rather pointless.

Maybe Weric could pass on the method followed by their tech to get it working in the first place? ........

That link came from Eric, or someone gave it to him.

Whatever the case, I'm done. I'd like to get a plug and play type card. I love desktops over laptops. Maybe I am seeing it wrong, but I feel a desktop can produce more power without heating up, can stay on longer; won't burn out as fast.
But the ONLY reason, the ONLY reason I was so uncertain about a desktop, is the wireless. I don't get it. There are so many different commands, and ways to set this stuff up, and I do whatever I can to follow up on how it's done, and the only wireless card I got going are the plug and plays. I don't think I ever had a successful wireless card where I had to configure it.

I was able to, I believe, set up a graphic card back in '06 I think, and I was proud of myself for that. But wireless, another story.

I am sorry if I wasted you guys' time, I really wanted this card to work, but I'm done.
