Help installing python
« on: January 13, 2013, 03:10:58 PM »
Because synaptics is down for the meanwhile, ive had to manually install things. Because im still new to linux, and have relied on synaptics, i have no idea how to do that. I see the codes they want me to put in,but im not familiar with it. I want to install Python 2.7.3, and i have downloaded the python-2.7.3.tar.xz and the python-2.7.3.tgz file. because im not sure which one i need. so if anyone could help me install this, and tell me how to do it to more files, that would be awesome. thanks

NIKK, please don't install any software without using Synaptic (just a heads up, Synaptics with an addes 's' is the software to control touchpads  ;)).

Please read this so that you use the proper repository - with Synaptic!

If you have any questions, come back and we'll help you get everything worked out.

Updating Python needs to rebuild all packages what depends on it!!
This is a lot of work to the packagers (a big part of the repository have to rebuild)

Updating with the 2.7 Python source is breaking your install!

well, i would really like to have python, that particular version at that. Its pretty inconvenient that synaptic is going through this. I looked through the thread and im still not getting any files to show up in the list. Im not to sure how to go about the abiblio thing. i added two knew entrys to my repository list. the megagamer one, and whatever the second one is, and still no luck. i also tried to go through the code that was posted about source.list but its not finding the file. no such file or directory bla bla.

First rule when reporting error messages is to report the exact error message... not bla bla. Unlike Windows, Linux error messages actually mean something and can point to an exact remedy for your situation. When the error is part of the result of a command in a terminal, we want to see the prompt and the command, as well as the error message. You can use copy/paste to post exactly what you see to your Post reply window.

Python allows you to install multiple versions together. I installed version 2.7 of PCLOS. Details already forgotten. But it was easy. I just read carefully the README file for Python.

I know it can be done if the packager use the name python2 or something like that but using the name python with the release number sees synaptic as update (upgrade) and all packages depends on it have to rebuild.
